"Biblical patriarchy" quiverfull leader cheats on his wife, organization shuts down

An Infidelity Scandal Just Shuttered a Major 'Biblical Patriarchy' Organization
BY ABBY OHLHEISER   |   NOV 11, 2013
A major conservative Christian organization shuttered its doors on Monday after its president, Doug Phillips, resigned from his position in the wake of an extramarital affair. Phillips is an extremely influential leader in the "Biblical Patriarchy" movement, a wing of conservative evangelical Christianity that believes men should have "dominion" over women. Phillips and his organization, Vision Forum, are enormously active in a cluster of related ministries, including the Christian homeschooling movement. The group also advocates against access to birth control and abortion. Even if you don't know Vision Forum, you know some of its friends: Kirk Cameron, for one; the Duggars (pictured below), for another.

Here's what happened. At the end of October, Phillips posted a stunning letter to Vision Forum Ministries's site, simultaneously confessing to a "lengthy" extramarital affair and resigning from the organization: "I engaged in a lengthy, inappropriate relationship with a woman," he wrote, adding, "while we did not 'know' each other in a Biblical sense, it was nevertheless inappropriately romantic and affectionate." Phillips essentially promised to stay away from speaking engagements and public appearances as a representative of the organization while he sought forgiveness. But it looks like Vision Forum, an organization nearly synonymous with Phillips himself, couldn't see a path forward without his presence. Here is the frank statement on the closure: u

---_---
It is difficult to overstate how fundamentally an extramarital affair damaged Phillips's reputation in the short term. That's because Vision Forum's work centered around the "restoration of the Christian household." In short, the organization enforced what it would argue is a Biblicly-based family structure where the husband serves as the spiritual and practical head of the household. His wife and children, especially any daughters not yet of marrying age, live under his dominion. Phillips's family, like the well-known Duggars, were also practicing Quiverfull adherents. That movement holds up procreation as the highest calling for (properly married) women, meaning that Quiverfull families grow quite large. Phillips has eight children, and the Duggars have 19 kids. Adherents usually home-school their children, rejecting the notion that anyone but the family and God should have input into a child's education. Family is central to, and the mission of, Vision Forum's entire reason for existence.

In the teen chastity movement, a majority of the kids admit to trying alternatives to biblical sex, such as oral and anal sex and mutual masturbation. They learn all the loopholes to keep their 'virginity' intact. I guess that it all depends on your definition of sex; whether it's biblical, legal or medical. If that guy didn't know her in the biblical sense, well...

Too bad. Bill Maher talking about his high school Purity Prom would have been great comic fodder.

I don't know about these fancy-shmancy modern interpretations of the bible that this guy's been reading, but if he's going according to the true and incontestable old testament bible beliefs, then he's only in the wrong if he doesn't pay the woman's father or whomever's in-charge of arranging his new hunnie's paramour schedule.

- If I remember correctly, I believe he owes the woman's father a cow and four chickens. As long as he didn't break anything. If he did, it'll be extra......

"His wife and children, especially any daughters not yet of marrying age, live under his dominion."

In the bible it wasn't just the daughters the father controlled. He could put any of his infants onto the trash heap, to let them die of exposure, if he didn't want them. The father or one of the wives could murder their sons if the boy was a drunkard or unruly.

You would think if they were going to be a "biblical family" they would read up on how it really was during Jesus's day and age.

If someone has five cats, I believe they love cats.

But if someone has 19 cats, I’m no longer convinced they love cats. I’m suspicious, rather, that they’re some kind of hoarder.
...
Perhaps such a person somehow needs cats. Perhaps they desire to control cats or to possess cats. But it does not seem likely that they love cats.

And that’s pretty much my take on the “Quiverfull” movement.

When people stop being surprised by this, our society will be making progress.
