Seven Stores That Won’t Ruin Their Workers’ Thanksgivings

This year, more than a dozen retailers will open their doors on Thanksgiving Day, leaving millions of workers with little choice but to forgo their holiday to jumpstart the biggest shopping weekend of the year. With profits in mind, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Kmart, Macy’s, Kohl’s, J.C. Penney, Toys R Us, and more, have announced early Thanksgiving hours.

Still, there are a handful of places — large and small, national and local — that are resisting the pressure in order to give their employees a real holiday.

“That’s one day that’s a family day,” an employee at the Charles Ro Supply Company, the country’s largest toy train store, said of its policy to remain closed on Thanksgiving Day. “Home life’s a little more important.”

Patagonia Head of Retail Marketing Vickie Achee explained the company’s decision to keep stores closed “so our associates can celebrate the holiday with their family/friends. This has been our tradition during our tenure in retail.”

Costco, Nordstrom, REI, Burlington Coat Factory, and American Girl also confirmed they’re closed on Thanksgiving.

The only justification I might see for such is if one finds out at the last minute they're short an item for the Thanksgiving meal.

i'm sure there are a few where it is convenient for them. because of work or whatever else they can get things done on that day.

but i would say for most it's just about falling for all the advertising and the media building it up.

the news people are always there anre you always see crowds with carts piled up.

That when you put "Fox war on Christmas" into Google, you get plenty of results for recent things showcasing their manufactured outrage of people saying, "Happy Holidays," but when you put in, "Fox war on Thanksgiving," 99% of the results deal with Obama not mentioning God a few years back during his presidential Thanksgiving speech.

So a store's policy of trying to be more inclusive by having their employees say, "Happy Holidays," = worst thing ever.
A store's policy of taking away a holiday from their employees = Eh, no big deal.

The stores with shitty sales on thanksgiving close.

The stores with good sales, stay open.

The owners are after profits the other 364 days a year; it doesn't stop on the last Thursday of November.

And furthermore
Thanksgiving is an AMERICAN holiday. Their are a whole helluva lotta people that live in America that don't celebrate thanksgiving too. (And some of them like to get their shopping dome when the lines are small)

They want you to go for a bike ride instead and support Buy Nothing Day. I refuse to go shopping on Black Friday. Our family draws names and you buy one gift, $25 max. Although we are atheists, we do get the extended family together on Christmas and share a good meal and conversation.

They should have planned ahead, and hired temps who "want" to work the holiday. When they have enough workers, they stay open. It's shouldn't be work or get fired.
