but like the weather, they aint doing anything about it.
One of the appalling things about Thanksgiving is seeing a rush of people
heading to the soup kitchen to serve some meals to the "less fortunate".
The next week? Theyre home picking their self satisfied teeth and stroking their
assuaged consciences.
The problem really isnt enough people dolloping potatoes and gravy on holidays.
Besides, you havent really experienced Christmas if you havent been stuck serving a long line
of people who have no better place to go. And I dont mean in a shelter or regular feeding location.
The problem is PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND the mechanisms and reality of what it means to end up
on the street. No matter how it happens, you usually DONT HAVE A CAR OR MONEY IN YOUR POCKET.
You cant just stamp your feet to warm up when you are chilled to the bone.
You cant tote around a campstove in a shopping cart when the police confiscate them.
You cant drive out to the forest and camp out.
Being poor and homeless is something few people here seem to grok, and I fully understand that.
I was a loudmouthed self-righteous anti-war "progressive" LONG before I ever exposed myself to
the homeless people of Fresno by getting sucked into Food Not Bombs.
Even then, the work of gleaning, collecting, cleaning. prepping, cooking and transporting food, serving to
lines of up to 100 people DID NOT teach me anything about homelessness.
That requires engaging them as people, directly. Listening and learning.
It is a lot different than thinking about it, or talking about it.
And it opens your eyes, even when your heart is already open for business.
So, after ten years of watching the city of Fresno abuse and make life more miserable for the poorest of the poor,
we have reached a point where they are able to tell the homeless to disappear.
Why is that?
One reason is the climate is mild enough that only a few people die of exposure every year or so.
And the newspaper no longer reports it.
So emergency shelters are not paramount as they are in colder parts of the country.
When you look around your area and you see operations giving people some food and shelter, dont assume
it is like that everywhere.
And obviously, there is a huge prejudice against Fresno here, because of Rimjob.
You all should be disgusted by the vile conservative politicians who have threatened liberals with dirty bombs
and police gunfire, holding grudges and carrying out vendettas against peace advocates.
You should also realize they are still threatening the homeless, and they have nearly completed
a plan of destroying the homeless population by bulldozing safe, organized encampments as well as dangerous
messes the city created over the years through their mendacity and indifference to community health issues.
What can you do about that?
Everything.
These horrific actions take place in the state of California.
Jerry Brown is once again, Governor of the state.
Do you think he objects to this horror?
No, I sure dont. No more than he minds pepper spraying students.
But I will tell you what means a lot to him.
Your opinion.
He wants something he will never have, but he wants it regardless.
You all could force him to act simply because of his vanity.
contact the governor of California and tell him you dont think the homeless in Fresno should be treated like vermin.
Tell him you know what is going on in his state, and he will never have your support if he doesnt correct the hateful
actions of the phony born again politicians who literally hide behind their churches and pulpits while doing the devils work.
DO SOMETHING.
but please,
dont serve a meal on Thanksgiving and call it good.
thats just bullshit.

(18,998 posts)And I know what you mean, because I have been homeless on the street...and know what it is like to try to scrape together enough money to buy a candy bar to calm the hunger that gnaws at you...
But I was lucky and did not have to spend too long in that state because I was young and there were people around that did help me to get out of that situation...not so now when most of the people are not just the young but whole families and old people and they have been isolated from the eyes of the rest of us...out of site out of mind.

(6,896 posts)The people I see on the street are generally older than I am, harder miles, and FAR TOO OFTEN
flat out elderly.
When I started running into numerous people in their 70's in dire need of blankets, tents and sleeping bags,
what was left of my head exploded.

(21,020 posts)I find the holidays so depressing.
Every Thanksgiving and Christmas people put on this big show of serving meals to the poor and homeless.
Which is nice.
But once the holidays are over, what happens to the poor and homeless?
What...they only eat once a year?
People go out of their way to be nice to each other during the holidays, generally. The rest of the year, nobody gives a shit.
Why can't this whole holiday spirit thing last all year long?

(6,896 posts)First time I heard about him, he was teaching a math class at my almost mater, and my main party pal was very excited to be taking his class.
Now, my ex-party pal (a meth habit and hallucinatory accusations can really screw up a relationship) works the drone side of the street.
I hope Lehrer doesnt feel responsible.
At least those military contractors have a solid source to score candy from.

(4,631 posts)Mainly because most people barely make ends meet enough to get by in life. Generosity is contagious, and it is contracted around this time of year, so it spreads among all sensitive humans. Aside from vindictive people, most all others would be more generous if they had more to share.

(37,748 posts)My church is forced to turn away volunteer workers during the holidays because so many turn up feeling oddly charitable, but during the rest of the year... we're lucky to get one new face to assist the Saturday night dinner lines.
I know I should be thankful that people do show up... even if it's only once a year, but like you, I love to see these new faces in August or February.

(22,271 posts)Make it a project to pick up X-amount (I do 5) of extra non-perishable items every time you go grocery shopping and set them aside to be taken to the Community Food Bank. You'd be surprised at how quickly it ads up.
Don't be afraid to give a homeless person a few dollars. They may or may not spend it on drink/drugs but who cares? If it's misspent that's on the receiver, not the giver.
There's often homeless around the CVS I go to. If I can, I try to take that opportunity to buy as many tuna salad or chicken salad with crackers kits. They're not that expensive and it's at least one meal.
Often ice is a problem with the homeless. They have to buy ice fairly often to keep what foods they have refrigerated. It's easy to fill up empty milk cartons with ice, freeze them, and take them to the homeless. It costs NOTHING.
If, like me, you cook WAY more at Thanksgiving than you and your guests can eat, why not wait until the day(s) after Thanksgiving, heat up the leftovers, put them in Styrofoam takeout doggy bags and distribute them where needed.
Those are just a few ideas in which people can help year 'round. I'm sure DUers, generous people that they are, can add more ideas.
Thanks for this thead, reddread.
Btw, hi from a fellow Fresnan.
Excellent tips!
It has to be a year round effort to be able to see any positive results.

(16,646 posts)Around here, if you want to work the homeless kitchen meal over the holidays you (or your "group" have to have "pulled shifts" at other times of the year. People are often shocked when they call up to "volunteer for Thanksgiving" only to be told they are "full up" with volunteers but they can sign up for the middle of February if they'd like.
Homelessness is a SERIOUS problem and the solutions are generally not well liked by the right wing.

(22,271 posts)Haven't seen Jay in years. As far as I know he's still working with the local Democrats. Unfortunately, me and the local Democrats parted ways years ago never to be re-united but it sounds like a great evening. If I'm well enough, I'll stop by. Thanks for the heads up.
