Rock Legend Iggy Pop Urges Gov. Snyder to Cancel Wolf Hunt, and Let the People Decide

Rock Legend Iggy Pop Urges Gov. Snyder to Cancel Wolf Hunt, and Let the People Decide

Protests “Senseless Killing of These Majestic Animals for Sport”

Michigan native Iggy Pop, a music legend and member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, has endorsed the Keep Michigan Wolves Protected campaign to stop the trophy hunting of wolves and restore the right of Michigan voters to have a say over wildlife policy. Michigan’s first wolf hunt in decades begins tomorrow.

In a letter to Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, dated Nov. 12, 2013, Pop writes: “As a Michigan native and someone who has cared about animals, both wild and domestic, for as long as I can remember, I was dismayed…that a bill you signed last May (S.B. 288/P.A. 21) gave Michigan’s Natural Resources Commission the authority to decide which animals can be hunted…which resulted in the first authorized wolf hunt since wolves underwent state protection in 1965.”

“To further compound the issue Mlive.com just unveiled several investigative reports that reveal the state used ‘half-truths’ and ‘falsehoods’ to support authorizing a hunting season on wolves in Michigan. The reports make clear that the decision to approve wolf hunting was based on fraudulent information and not sound science,” said Pop.

“I am asking all of my fans in Michigan to sign up and help gather signatures to reverse this decision and protect the wolf from future hunts,” Pop continues. “The senseless killing of these majestic animals for sport is a disappointment to the people of Michigan and a stain on its Government.” He called on Gov. Snyder to “do the right thing by staying the hunt and allowing the people’s voice to be heard” on the issue.

THIS is what happens when you wipe out a natural predator:
http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2012/09/deer_hunting_michigan_disease.html

We should be doing everything we can to bolster the wolves, not hunt them.

I'm convinced the people who want to hunt the wolves are just trying to force overpopulation of other animals, like the deer, to expand the hunting season/increase tags, etc.

Tell the people of Michigan that a wolf hunt would make the deer population explode and then Lyme disease will infect anyone who goes outdoors.

there is a very sad photo of a grinning hunter and a dead wolf. I'll never understand how someone can get joy from killing such a beautiful, majestic animal.

The fact that this Republican Governor and the Repuke Michigan legislature relied, in part, on a fabricated story to get this resolution passed makes it even worse.

I hope Wlive continues to investigate this story

The national Democratic Party needs to pump major money into Michigan next year, not only for Congressional races, but also state legislature races....These lying repukes need to be defeated,

With enough money to attack these GOP bastards next year, when they face re-election, Michigan could once again become a blue state

Into the Gray: Tribal vigil protests state-sanctioned wolf hunt

Posted by Adrian Hedden

With a single candle in hand, 7-year-old Sarah Sehl fought to protect the legacy of her people and one of their most sacred brethren.

Only in first grade, Sehl and her fellow students at the Saginaw Chippewa Academy were ready to combat perceived political injustices and defend the wolf.

Local residents, tribal members and other concerned citizens gathered Thursday outside the Saginaw Chippewa Academy for a vigil in protest of the state-sanctioned wolf hunt to begin today.

“We hold vigils like this for many reasons,” said Nathan Isaac, a cultural teacher at the academy. “Usually it’s tragic. The community really pulls together when we need it. Tonight we are standing here for the wolf. It plays a very important part of our story.”

---

“What happens to the wolf, happens to us,” he said. “Our people were once hunted, too. Wolf hunting is not OK with our people. I will not hunt my brother.”

The Saginaw Chippewa Tribe is located some 400 miles from where the wolf hunt will take place.

Edit: The governing council of the Keweenaw Tribe does oppose the wolf hunt.
