When is the public going to figure out the police have perverted the Supreme Court guidelines governing "Use of Lethal Force"

A six-foot-tall, nearly 300-pound probation officer Antoine Jones shot and killed a 12-pound dog during a routine visit, claiming he was frightened for his life.

Georgia probation officers Ronnie Simmons and Antoine Jones visited Sherry Shelton’s home at the Loblolly Estates Mobile Home Park to check on her son. When Sherry Shelton opened the door, her 2-year-old Jack Russell terrier/Cocker Spaniel mix named Patches started barking at Jones. She told the officer that Patches wouldn’t bite, but before she could react, Jones drew his gun and shot the dog through her chest. Some 30 minutes later, Patches died.

When terrified Shelton asked Jones for an explanation, he responded that he was afraid for his life.

1. What kind of protection can we reasonably expect from someone that's scared of a 12 lb dog?

That guy should be removed from duty if for no other reason that he can't cope with the stress of roaming through streets infested with beagles and chihuahuas.

8. An excellent question

You would think that police training would make one better able to deal with the sorts of stresses involved in the job. Although I'm not sure a 12 lb dog should qualify as stress.

There needs to be a far more effective set of punishments for dealing with police who cross the line. I think much like the cases of sexual assault in the military, cases of police misconduct need to be taken out of the hands of police to investigate.

While I'm not taking back one single howl about local injustices where I retired - tiny remote MidWest bump in the road - there are a few people here I like. One's the meter reader. Even when my chows were alive, he didn't mind them a bit although they raised a big ruckus, circling and snarling and snapping. He'd just say, "Hi, girls!" and go on about his business. They would indeed have attacked if he'd stepped on the porch w/o me present, but I'd taken care to introduce him to the dogs from the beginning, and he knew he was safe as a babe in its mother's arms so long as he went about his business.

The mailman, on the other hand, hated them with a purple passion and fussed for years even though I put a mailbox on the front gate so he didn't have to come in the yard at all. Sometimes I'd hear him cussing under his breath as he walked past. He even hates my Jack Russell and always has, since she first arrived as a starved little 3-mo-old rescue. Under my care she's grown to an outsize 16" and close to a trim 30 lbs or so, but she's always happily excited to see him no matter what. When she barks it's a happy greeting. I think that man would be perfectly capable of shooting a lot of dogs if he carried a gun.
