They had no slick posters. Just a hand drawn sign. Two women obviously on their own dime. For once not the scouts or the boosters, no cookies for sale. This table at the dump was not taking spare change. Just a simple petition, just sign on the line. A town warrant was what they had in mind.
We, the People of the United States of America, reject the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Citizens United and other related cases, and move to amend our Constitution to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.

It will only be efforts like this, us, we the people, organizing at the grass roots level, with no media anointed leaders, no funding, no help from above, that will bring about the fundamental changes that are required to reverse the course we are on.

(16,844 posts)make a change in this country. We should be able to start petitions in every state simultaneously. Unlike other amendments, I believe the hard part would be getting it passed in Congress. I think the state legislatures will actually be a little easier.

(22,669 posts)Most of us are ignorant of how to move petitions forward and at what level of government to bring these petitions to. For us, we need someone to help get out foot in the door, so we too can help.

(24,284 posts)didn't get a very good return on their investment in the last election. Maybe people are getting smarter and cost of buying votes through advertising will become prohibitively expensive.
I do agree with the OP that a constitutional amendment should be sought and supported.

(45,274 posts)This table lists the top donors to this candidate in the 2012 election cycle. The organizations themselves did not donate , rather the money came from the organizations' PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals' immediate families. Organization totals include subsidiaries and affiliates.
Because of contribution limits, organizations that bundle together many individual contributions are often among the top donors to presidential candidates. These contributions can come from the organization's members or employees (and their families). The organization may support one candidate, or hedge its bets by supporting multiple candidates. Groups with national networks of donors - like EMILY's List and Club for Growth - make for particularly big bundlers.

(2,479 posts)IBM "gave" about 400,000. But IBM is a huge company, it would not be surprising if 2,000 liberal employees of IBM independently gave 200 each just because they like Obama. On the other hand, if this is a bundled contribution from 200 execs giving the max 2,000 each, that sounds more like a concerted effort to influence legislation. But the list doesn't distinguish, so I am not sure what conclusions to draw.
I guess I think it would be more useful with information like size and number of bundled contributions, how many checks, average and median amounts, etc.

(45,274 posts)I'm sure there is a lot of information out there if you care to make an intensive search. Personally, I don't.

(10,597 posts)... this petition is presented at every single Democratic get together from here on in until it's actually taken up and passed. Every single time that more than two Democrats meet, this Move To Amend petition must be present. As well, on street corners, at fairs, get-togethers of ANY kind, ANYWHERE. Don't anyone ever say it can't be done. It can and it must be done, and ASAP unless we are just going to give up on democracy in America forever.
