Tell Congress to Reinstate the Voting Rights ActThe Supreme Court just struck down a key section of the landmark Voting Rights Act that requires jurisdictions with a history of racial discrimination to get approval from the Justice Department before changing voting laws.
The law, signed in 1965, is considered one of the most important pieces of civil rights legislation ever passed. In the last 10 years alone, the Voting Rights Act has helped stop Republican voter suppression laws in states like Virginia, North Carolina and Florida.
We have to get the law reinstated in places where voters desperately need protection from overreaching Republican governors and legislatures, before it's too late. According to The New York Times, "State officials across the South are aggressively moving ahead with new laws requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls." If passed, these new laws could effectively disenfranchise thousands of eligible voters.
Sign the petition to tell Congress to reinstate the Voting Rights Act.

(3,888 posts)insurance companies more than it benefits the average American. Roberts provided cover for the other right wing justices on this one.
And he led the charge, along with the other criminal justices, when they declared that there was no evidence that those states and counties, which were covered by the Voting Rights Act, would engage in discriminatory voting practices today.
No evidence? Humm.

(27,985 posts)But your title made me think I was going to come over here and say something like, Duh? But yeah, this is in it's own way as awful as Citizen's United. If this fledgling country makes it another 100 years, I hope this Supreme Court is seen for the awful thing it is.

(6,679 posts)voting is not a privilege to be earned. It's constitutional and moral right. We should be talking about giving every single American AND legal resident the easiest way to vote technologically possible.
We need the Voting Rights act.... plus.
