Coachella Valley Unified to keep Arab mascot, but revisions will be made

THERMAL – Coachella Valley High School will keep the “Arab” name, but the east valley school district will discuss revisions to the campus mascot with a national anti-discrimination group.

During a special meeting of the school board Friday night, Coachella Valley Unified Superintendent Darryl Adams said the school district will meet with the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee next week.

A news conference is planned for Tuesday afternoon, where the future of the polarizing mascot will be discussed.

Adams said he hoped to make a proposal to the school board by the end of the year. But no matter how the mascot may change, the school will stay the “Arabs,” he said.

“(Changing) the name “Arab” is no longer on the table. It is a name we will keep,” Adams announced at the board meeting.

Racist meathead Darryl Adams:

Hmm. What if Adams came to this school and the mascot was "Negroes" or "Africans" or "Blackskins"? Would he even bother DEBATING this issue?

NPR recently profiled the Arab mascot. The reason why the school chose Arab?

"Around the turn of the 20th century, the United States Department of Agriculture sent agricultural explorers to the Middle East and Northern Africa to bring back dates," says Sarah Seekatz, a doctoral student at the University of California, Riverside, studying the history of dates in the Coachella Valley. "And they found that the Coachella Valley was one of the best places to grow them in the United States."

To most people, Coachella is known for the town with an annual music festival. Now it's got a shamefully racist high school. It's a pox on an otherwise enlightened multicultural California.

What is the racism charge based upon? What race is the name "Arab" eluding to?
