Franklin Pierce was the first president to affirm his oath, in 1853, rather than swear it. He also put his hand on a book of laws, rather than a Bible.
He's also one of the most easily forgotten Presidents.

(4,015 posts)He practically had 3 terms - what with him being the brain and muscle of the Monroe administration - and has shaped America's history more than most books let on. I think he's one of the most admirable presidents we ever had - not to speak of his many great achievements that came after his presidency.
