British MEP Nikki Sinclaire reveals she is transgender

A British member of the European Parliament has revealed she is a transwoman.

Nikki Sinclaire MEP, a former member of the United Kingdom Independence Party, revealed she had undertaken gender reassignment surgery over 20 years ago in her autobiography, Never Give Up.

Sinclaire believes this makes her the UK's first trans parliamentarian.
...
In the past, Sinclaire had denied being trans, as questions were raised within UKIP due to her height and sexuality.

She was previously the party secretary of UKIP, but resigned following a disagreement with party leader Nigel Farrage for refusing to sit with an allied group, Europe of Freedom and Democracy, as she claims they had 'openly homophobic opinions.'

Background - UKIP is the closest thing to the Tea Party in UK politics, though entirely separate from the Conservative party. Their main policy is to get the UK out of the EU, but they're more right wing in general, wanting to cut immigration more, and having a tendency to deny global warming (the nutty Christopher Monckton was their spokesman on climate change for a bit, before they seemed to decide he is too loopy even for them). And they tend towards sexism and homophobia, as do the European parties they ally with in the EU parliament. So this is not where you'd expect to find the first transgender politician at that level.
