(6,154 posts)Had to Google that. Looks like we have more than one thing to be sorry about.
But then he's from Alberta. So... Yeah... If only Alberta would separate and Quebec would stay.

(53,012 posts)It's nice to see another country be the butt of jokes for a change.
We're not taking him. He's all yours. We've got enough lunatics of our own.

(6,154 posts)Part of their rage stems from being "trapped" in a country that's farther left than they would like to be. Note: there is a lot of wealth up here, oil wealth, tech wealth, foreign wealth... That wealth tends to vote to the right. Luckily we have a history of being a liberal country and so far that has served us well for the majority. But like I said there is a LARGE wealthy population up here, herhaps larger than the US compared to our poor population, and they want to be set FREE. The rest of us up here are staunch liberals but it's getting harder as the years go by

(296,829 posts)Progressive city on the whole.. so, this was a surprise to me. When I first started hearing about Rob Ford I just presumed it was a Liberal gone off the rails. And, then of course the more I heard I realized .. not so.
When does he come up for re-election? or does he?

(18,807 posts)You've got the downtown, urban area, which is more or less what you think the city's like, and then a huge swathe of suburbs, exurbs and outright rural areas that got welded onto it awhile back. That's Ford Nation, and for the most part it really hates the downtown.
If you look at maps of the last mayoral election in Toronto it's pretty jarring.

(296,829 posts)i have a fuller picture.
I use to live in upper state New York and there are lots of pockets of republicons all over the place. Albany and Ithaca are notable exceptions.
I just found this illuminating article on him at the NYT..

"But Mr. Ford found himself riding a populist antitax wave, especially after a garbage strike in the city soured many residents on unions, and the left-leaning incumbent decided not to run again for mayor.
Further, after years of pent-up resentments, suburban voters were ready for one of their own. Mr. Ford embodied their rage, promising to end the gravy train of excess spending and what he called the war on cars.
Much more..

(16,834 posts)It would be interesting to see which one could make the bigger fool of himself with the cameras rolling. They could host a show for washed-up stars and politicians. I miss Anna-Nicole Smith so much!

(42,516 posts)all over the place for Ford. I told them after 8 years of being embarrassed by George Bush I was kind of enjoying it. Sad, though. And surprising that he still has so much support. That's a side of Canada I don't see when we're up there.
