Miz t. was leaving Lowe's this afternoon.
She was coming out of the parking lane and stopped for crossing traffic.
Another car pulled up behind her.
Just then a guy in a pickup truck started backing out of his slot next to her.
She couldn't move so she LEANED on the horn.
Not 'beep beep'....HOOOOOOOOONNNNKKKK!!!
He backed into the right front fender of our Prius.
Put a hell of a dent in it.

They get out and he says "You hit me."
"I didn't hit you, I wasn't moving. YOU HIT ME! I blew the horn because I couldn't move."
"Oh. Gee. I left my hearing aid at home and I was listening to a country music CD."
At least the guy was decent about it.
Gave her all his info, insurance policy number, driver's license number, etc.

I asked her how old he was.
"Older than us."
I'm 72 and she's 69.
So he was a geezer like me, but older.


AND HE LEFT HIS GODDAM HEARING AID AT HOME?
And I bet he had the volume on that CD way cranked up so he could hear it.
Shit.


This guy is a danger to himself and others.

It won't cost us any money to get the Prius repaired, but it will cost us in bother, time, etc.

Did I mention that I was pissed.

2. Be thankful no one was hurt.

Maybe he'll learn from this and remember next time to bring his hearing aid. Maybe a family member or close friend will take this as a cue and start talking to him about having others drive him. Not an easy conversation to have with the elderly because it's the last semblance of their independence in some instances, but one that is necessary. I hope when I get to that point, I won't be stubborn about it.

10. Something very similar happened to me a few months back.

I pulled out from our driveway into the street and stopped when I saw the car in the parking space on the street start to back out. I tooted the horn, trying to get his attention, then landed on it full tilt. I couldn't back up because it wasn't clear that I could without hitting someone else. They just kept coming.

I didn't bother to try to grab witnesses, since it was so clear (I thought) what had happened. And then they got out of the car and they suggested the damage was so minor they didn't need to bring a claim against me...

I was laying on the horn so hard at least two people in my office (behind closed doors and windows) heard and noticed the horn blast. but this dingbat couldn't hear it.
