white suburban moms who — all of a sudden — their child isn't as brilliant as they thought they were

http://news.investors.com/ibd-editorials-obama-care/111813-679647-duncan-blames-white-suburban-moms-against-common-core.htm

"It's fascinating to me that some of the pushback is coming from, sort of, white suburban moms who — all of a sudden — their child isn't as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isn't quite as good as they thought they were, and that's pretty scary."

Secretary Duncan made his comments about the Common Care State Standards (CCSS) before a group of school superintendents in Richmond, Va., to a meeting of the Council of Chief State Schools Officers organization (CCSSO). This is one of the two organizations that own the public license to the Common Core State Standards.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative was devised by a group of the nation's governors and backed by the Obama administration in 2009 with the goal of setting a uniform standard for grades K-12 nationwide. Some 45 states, in many cases enticed by federal grants, have signed on.

Watching my (good) school district tie their schedule in absolute knots to give every advantage for the
high-stakes testing simply reinforces to me how misguided the entire effort is. We get automated phone
calls the night before tests telling us to make sure that our child gets enough sleep and a good breakfast.

I think the schools make the kids more nervous about the tests than the tests do.

But the idiotic way they teach division on the common core will CERTAINLY cost us dominance in science
and math later. The "model" technique looks cool, is very visual, and completely does not generalize to
more than perhaps three digit numbers. It isn't more than a stunt to me.

And then they de-stress the algorithm.

It's the one time I've truly been disappointed with my kids' math curriculum.

public school system is not set up to play to their strengths or to help them improve their weaknesses. It tells them what they must do, and if they can't do it, they are punished for it and so is their school and so are their teachers. Duncan can kiss my ass.

are less brilliant than average. Now that we have tested, tested, evaluated, tested again, and finally seem know the obvious, what are we really going to do? Someday that 49% will be adults and will need employment.
