I saw something that scared me yesterday.

I saw something while walking down Fort Lowell yesterday. I was walking by a Stone Mason Shop and they had some grave markers out there. One had everything filled out and was done on grey marble. The next was on black marble and has some of the same stuff on it like a Unicorn and the same epitaph, very spooky epitaph.

It was not all filled out yet, it had no name, no date of death, it did have a birth year on it, my birth year. The epitaph stated "Shattered Dreams".

This shook me up. The design is one I would pick for myself. But that epitaph...

The EF-5, all the way to the recent hit and run, this spooked me. It is like Death is teasing me. He is getting his jollies by scaring me white!

Some works of art are designed to remind us of our, and everything's, mortality. The "Shattered Dreams" part is a particularly artistic little comment. Either someone ordered it and it's not done or someone was being creative in their advertising copy, knowing that it would cause an aesthetic (in this case uneasy) response. Who doesn't fear, and in some ways have, shattered dreams?

I like those moments, and stepping back and marveling at how things affect us, make us feel a little superstitious or extraordinary or shocked. But the stepping back is an important part of that.
