School Security: Should parents have to open their lives in order to eat with their child?

http://www.ajc.com/weblogs/get-schooled/2013/nov/22/eat-mystery-meat-your-child-should-you-have-open-y/

"Many parents are going to their child's school this week to share a Thanksgiving meal.

Are they also being asked to share their personal information?

At one Fulton school, all 200 parents were asked to register as volunteers before they could eat with their child.

Does it sound like a simple request?

It's not. It is not a matter of signing your name and moving on. Under a new state law, registering as a volunteer means permitting the school to access your criminal background, and it makes you a mandated reporter of child abuse -- subject to criminal penalties if you fail to do so. And if you don't provide accurate information about yourself, you also can be prosecuted.

When one mother balked at doing all this to sit with her 6-year-old for 15 minutes, she wasn't allowed to eat in the cafeteria, but had to dine with her child alone in the principal's office."

I am all for measures that make schools safe, but I think this is outrageous. To require parents to register as "volunteers" in order to eat a meal with their children is overboard.

We have to renew our background check every year to volunteer but the other events like Thanksgiving feast they just ask to see some sort of ID if they don't already know you.
