Actually, found this article. The apparatus was upgraded, but apparently they didn't repair the cement arond the flame. It still looks cracked in the pictures. But agree with other response, freeze, thawing cycle as well as the ground settling.

Wiki says it is a circular flagstone from Cape Cod. No mention of the crack, though.
