(16,834 posts)Apparently people didn't think of a fetus as it's own separate entity before that stage. It sort of worked itself out that way in Roe v Wade, too. The different trimesters spoken of in that opinion are simply different stages of development, dividing lines between when an abortion is acceptable and when it isn't. I don't think there should be any restrictions myself; I think it's between a woman and her doctor to decide if an abortion should be done. But I can see the rationality behind the quickening rule.
