I was busy, so I didn't see all the coverage of that business contemporaneously, either.

I did see the Haig babble--blew my mind. A realization formed in my mind as a consequence of his rank stupidity that it wasn't what you knew that got you promoted. I was amazed what heights that guy ascended to, in terms of rank/paygrade/national security position, and I just couldn't juxtapose that with his comments without saying to myself -- I couldn't believe it.

A cunning, and at the same time stupid, political animal, was Al Haig....

I absolutely loathed Reagan. I do remember having the fleeting thought that it was too bad the shot wasn't fatal - although I quickly felt ashamed about thinking such a thing. More substantial was my thought that, "Oh shit, now he'll be elevated to holy victimhood."

The Reagan years were sheer torture to me. Witnessing this bizarre and despical cult lay waste to the entire social contract in every way their evil minds could think of. My main memory of that time was the utter disgust I felt. His being shot was just another layer of disgustingness.

Coincidentally I was standing around one of their eternally turned on one-eyed boxes that was perched in the company cafeteria, and watching the "pageant" unfold. I didn't stay in either place for very long (my choice).

Ironically, I had suggested a "Death Pool" (long before I ever heard the term) at the time Reagan was elected.

I had been using the idea that the "President elected in a year with a zero die in office", and I was saying that people should contribute a dollar. Guess which month Reagan dies.

Almost immediately, Reagan could have died.

I remember the important things like the Challenger disaster, 9-11, and hearing that Phil Mickelson won his first major.

But Reagan getting shot: I can't remember. I couldn't stand him. That's what I remember.

Reagan didn't die, so that might be why it's more difficult to remember.

Our family had no TV in the 1960's and my elementary school didn't mention the news, so I missed all of that era. I was also too young in 1963 to remember JFK.

I worked for the state at the time and Reagan had just ended Carter's C.E.T.A. a program that had trained and put to work many people. At work there were sobbing frightened people who didn't know if they were going to be able to find work ever again. Many of the woman were divorcees, in their 50's, who had never worked outside of the home until C.E.T.A. trained them and found them work.

In the coffee shop an air force officer walked in behind me and said "Reagan's been shot"! I said, "Good".

I was in high school.

And Al Haig... a few years later when I was in college Haig gave a talk on campus. The big issue then was deployment of Pershing II missiles in Europe, and activists were out in force to give him the greeting he deserved. The best bit of heckling came when someone called out, "I'm in charge!" which echoed about the room as others repeated the taunt. Even those who disapproved of efforts to shout him down had to chuckle at that one...

The country just does not need another assassination on its rap sheet.

Immediately edited to add: As a member of the Boomer generation I had already had one psychic blow after another as American leaders of all kinds were violently assassinated. I no longer told myself that this event was unique, as I had believed when President Kennedy was murdered. That's why it didn't have the same impact.

I think I was at home doing something, but I honestly can't remember what.

Funny, I remember exactly where I was when I learned that JFK, RFK, Martin Luther King, and John Lennon were shot, but Reagan, not so much. I do remember thinking (god, if there is a god, forgive me), why did THIS one have to live.

When I got home a few people told me that they thought I was going to be named as the shooter they knew I was in DC, yes I hated and still hate that fucker RR but NEVER threatened to shoot him so my reply was well if it was me I would have finished the job. Of course everyone laughed at the joke.

Fuck RR I hope he is roasting in the fiery pit where he belongs and I hope all the asshats that voted for him will be joining him when they too kick the bucket.

400 voices strong. The director, Lee Kjelson, told us. We sang the
Hallelujah chorus from memory during that rehearsal, in honor of Pres. Reagan.
I thought that was a little odd at the time.

Ronnie Rayguns was an evil POS, however, I still didn't advocate the violence of a gunhumper on him. I only wish that he had never held the reins of power, the damage that jerk caused to this nation might never be repaired. He makes me wish there were an afterlife so he could be burning in Hell for all eternity.

I was working third shift at the time so I assume I might have had a nap after work and watched the news at some point.

What I do remember was Frank Reynolds saying that James Brady had died and then getting told that he hadn't. Reynolds then chastised the newsroom on the air about getting their information right.

I can tell you where I was when JFK and MLK were shot, even know where I was when I heard FDR died - I was 10, walking to the store, heard about it from people standing on their porches, crying. But no idea about Reagan. I do remember crying the night he was elected - knew we were on a downward slide.

I could probably tell you if I knew what time of day it was; my mother is a fastidious creature of habit.

In 30 years, she's managed to get her first cup of coffee into the same 10 minute window every day except twice. those were bad days...she wakes up at the exact same time too: 7:12am. It really fucked me up when I got to Kindergarten and the teacher said we had these things called "free time" and "recess"...What do you mean I can do whatever I want? This is uncomfortably unstructured for me!

I don't really remember much other than the bus being late that afternoon.

Now that I think about it, I was in 1st grade, because Mrs. Butterbaugh was our teacher and she made us stand outside waiting for the bus even though it was raining. She was so mean, even the parents didn't like her.

We went on a field trip to the Okeephenokee Swamp, and a bunch of alligators started approaching the picnic area. My mom was chaperoning and herded most of the kids on the bus and closed the door while one of the other mothers got a group of kids into her car and blew the horn at the alligators. Mrs. Butterbaugh ended up standing on the picnic table surrounded by alligators and some of the mothers took pictures of it. I remember them laughing as they handed it around.

Knowing my mother, she was probably the prime instigator of them taking the pictures.

in my memory I am getting it mixed up with John Lennon.

December 8, 1980 versus March 30, 1981.

So I would have been in the same dorm. Unless it was spring break. 1:27 central time. Still almost lunch time, but I would not be watching TV. Other than private rooms, there were only two TVs in the whole dorm. But one was by the mailboxes, which is where I was when I heard about Lennon, going to check if the mail was out yet because it was very late that day. Monday night football was on the tube, and Howard Cosell broke in to announce that Lennon was shot. And I was thinking "who the heck is John Lennon?"

So perhaps it was the same place. Maybe I was walking back from class and checking for mail and the TV was on with the news.

I don't really remember though.

I do remember seeing the footage and thinking "that one guy was shot in the head and is lying face down on a storm gutter. Give me some news about him, because he looks like he's hurt bad."
