Frankly, I've never understood rushing out the day after Thanksgiving to buy a bunch of junk thinking that you're going to get a deal. If at all possible, I spend that Friday eating leftovers and laying around the house.

I'm over 50 and have never, not even once, shopped on Black Friday. Last year, I actively boycotted every chain that opened on Thanksgiving for the duration of the holiday shopping season, and will do the same this year. I shop local stores and Costco, which has already announced that they will not open on Thanksgiving.

I'm giving 20 bucks apiece to my niece and nephew, and that will be all of my Christmas spending this year. It's pathetic that Americans feel the need to save money so much that they go out into that melee. Black Friday wasn't that big a deal when I was growing up, but then again, the economy wasn't so shitty either. People actually made enough to live on and could pay full price for their presents.

For anyone who really needs the push, though, that video offers some good incentives.

I remember a few black fridays before they were universally named "Black Friday." So long ago that, while there were plenty of shoppers, the mall wasn't really crowded. I was there, not for "deals," but to pat myself on the back for getting my shopping done early and AVOIDING the later crowds.

Four decades later, I not only left "black friday" shopping behind with the 70s, I left malls behind, as well. It's been 20 years since I stepped foot inside a mall, except when my job sent me to a conference in Houston a dozen years ago. The hotel was ATTACHED to the mall, and that's where we had to go to eat.

I don't do much shopping. This year, I'll shop locally for what I can get locally, and online for what I can't. I'll always give the locals a chance first; but I already know what is out there in my small town. I might ask a local place to get something for me that nobody is carrying. I've done that before.

Really, we don't spend much money. We have a family pool, and a budget. Each adult gets one gift within that budget after we draw names from the hat. We started this process when the economy crashed, and it's worked for us. We'll enjoy the meal and tree; we'll watch movies and play board games and enjoy being with each other. The gifts are a small pleasure, but not the main event.

I love the crowds. Parking's not an issue. (I don't drive.) I get my Xmas shopping done all at once, then I watch everybody else complain for the next month.

13. We don't celebrate Christmas, so sometime at the end of October or first of November,

hubby & I go to Costco/Pet Smart & any other retail outlet that has something we need, & we stock up supplies to get us well into the New Year. The only stores I shop at during the holidays are the regular grocery store & of course, the liquor store!
