(10,362 posts)In the days before cellphones, people weren't afraid to be away from their phones. Now I tell my friend to turn her phone off so we can watch a 1 hour TV show in peace, and she tells me "no". She cannot mentally cope with disconnecting for under an hour! The texts and voicemail will all be there, but it doesn't matter.
What have we become?

(12,448 posts)We'll be out partying, like you do here, and my phone will ring. When I'm busy, I ignore the call and send them to VM figuring that if it's really important, they will leave a message. So picture this, 8 people standing around drinking and laughing and having a good time when my phone rings. I reach into my jacket, glance at the screen and kill the call. As I look up I see 14 eyes staring expectedly at me and all activity has ceased... they look like I just ate a puppy right there at the bar.
Maybe I'm just old, but being out of touch is often a welcome break for me.

(12,448 posts)I spent too much of my life in front of a screen or three to carry one with me all the time now.
I look at it as doing my part to teach the young ones the value of making the people in front of you feel important, it's the only polite thing to do.

Same. My carrier doesn't get service at the lake I go to. People tell me I need to switch so I can get service at the lake. lol no, I love it.

(24,265 posts)I find that young people won't ever answer their phones, at least not to talk, anyway. I insist on only communicating by talking, at least with friends or family.. I refuse to text or tweet. I have trained my grandchildren that if they want to talk to me, they must answer the phone. My granddaughter has a boyfriend who seems to have never talked live on a phone in his life. He doesn't even know how to say hello or identify himself. He's learning, though.

because of a phone is the 'out of range or non charged or lost, damaged' phone and that
will prob be rarer by the next decade.
