Check in...Thanksgiving at the in-laws with Fox News.

It's Florida, and my wife and I are known as the "liberal pukes" of the family. Affectionately, of course. But I don't think we'll get a reprieve until we check into a hotel. To make matters worse, wife's folk are old, so the tv is on LOUD.

It'll only get worse before it gets better...tommorow we head to stay with the Southern Baptist wing of the family. Fortunately, just for one night, but that's also where Thanksgiving dinner is taking place. I can't wait until my nephew, the minister, shows up (his wife is also a church elder, or whatever it's called), and my niece with five young children she home schools. All Southern Baptist Fox watchers. There obviously won't be any liquor in the house...I think I'll need it!

Also, take up smoking for a day: "Say, folks, I'd like to smoke a pipe so I'll step out side so I won't annoy anyone!"

I've used both in the past.

Also, I'm now taking my own car to "Thanksgiving not at KansDem's House." Then I can arrive and leave when I want...

The Southern Baptist wing tends not to have the TV during visits, but my wife's have it on from the moment they wake up until the go to bed. Even if they're not watching it. Torture.

Not visiting is not an option. We live 1,300 miles from my wife's family, so an annual visit is impossible to avoid. At least she usual visits by herself.

You see , if you had a heart condition or back problems or your arthritis kicked in suddenly or your gout began to flare you could stay home nursing that condition with some good brandy and pain medication while everyone sitting at the table would commensurate about how brave and stoic you are. Hell, you probably even gave them something to relate to as they discuss their conditions over turkey and pie. I know it's gotten me out of many problems, especially when the Saints are playing. it is amazing how that vertigo and high blood pressure just pops up when wife wants to go shopping for some new curtains.

was the single most perfect thing I could do to be able to avoid loaded holiday visits.

I almost always have to work the holiday or the day before and/or day after.

That keeps me from long trips.

Bring a flask to the religious house and take some nips while out "smoking your pipe."

with my husband's lovely Xtian relatives in a nearby town. His sister and family. MIL also joins us. Truly, the relatives are lovely - and have completely opposite political views (I don't get how Xtians can actually like GWB, Romney... Maybe they don't pay enough attention.) They are fairly apolitical, other than what the church dictates to them.

MIL is like us: strong leftist, non-religious.

MIL and SIL are together almost daily. She is MIL's support. The day after last year's presidential election, not a word was spoken between them about the results! This is the mode: they absolutely DO NOT UTTER a word about politics or religion!

Works really well for them!

Oh, and as for the T-giv imbibements: when dinner is at SIL's house, no alcohol allowed. So I just drink up while making the turkey at MIL's house. Maybe I'll put some in the dressing this year!

the mere flavor of alcohol can and will set off a recovering alcoholic and might start them drinking again. When we had a company Xmas party a friend stayed away from the rum-soaked cookies and even the various flavorings like vanilla (alcohol based) because of his fear of being drawn back into drinking. Rough for a recovering addict.

How bout all these nay sayers just put aside politics for one day and just appreciate your family as part of you and your history? Family is important, especially on Thanksgiving. Politicians come and go, but your extended family will always be with you. HAPPY THANKSGIVING DUERS!

I understand the obligation you are faced with and I admire your devotion to your wife for going along with it. Fortunately, it's only for a couple of days and you can keep telling yourself it will soon be over. Good luck!

Been here (SB's house) since about 12:30 and it's been blissfully quiet. No tv, no music, no nothing until after dinner (they took us out -- BIL/SIL, no kids here yet) then BIL turned on Access Hollywood when we got home, then turned TV off.

Later they asked if we wanted to watch tv. If we watch anything on Monday night it's the raunchy CBS line up, so we said no.
