(22,165 posts)Professionals and those in 24/7/365 fields have done this for years; however, the remuneration is commensurate and at least thos working know they are working for a higher purpose (not retail profits)

(29,671 posts)I can accept that. What I choose not to accept is when retailers feel the need to open for no other reason than greed. 9-1-1 open on all holidays? Necessary. Walmart? Not necessary.

(14,337 posts)There was a need for it, but since I worked overnight shift there, I still was able to have dinner with my family. While it was required that we work these Holidays, we also were paid double time (very nice) those days. Do retail workers get paid double time working on Thanksgiving Black Thurdays? Doubt that.

(29,671 posts)and the owners of a couple of restaurants in town would cook for us (the owners, not the staff) and drop off the massive meals the night before as a thank you for our service. (Everyone remembers police and fire, sometimes EMS but never dispatch). In mental health I was an employee of the state so I received holiday time, which was a paid day off at a later date. We always had a huge potluck in the office on holidays too.
I worked in a gas station one year on Christmas-no holiday pay, no thank you, not even a single break during the shift. Minimum wage all day long.

(2,928 posts)DU oldsters will remember an almost identical battle over stores being open on Sundays.
Right down to proud holdouts advertising that they will NEVER open on Sundays.
I think I see where this ends.........

(14,337 posts)My daughter has worked in supermarkets who were open but closed very early so employees can be with their families. I can almost see a supermarket staying open for short hours on Thanksgiving. People are cooking a big dinner and can run out of or have forgotten to buy something for the dinner. lol Been there, done that.
A Christmas gift can wait one more day.
