need some debunking help .. or info... ( Obama childrens book required reading in school )

This has been circulating around the internet and thus making its way onto facebook.. was wondering if anyone had any info about it...

-------------------

According to this, there's a nifty little book being taught to fourth graders at Buffview Elementary in Illinois that's all about Dear Leader. And apparently, it's raising a few eyebrows. It's called Barack Obama, it was written by Jane Sutcliffe, and - here's a shocker for you - it's new and totally compliant with the new Common Core Standards.

YAY!

This book isn't just biographical - it has some neat little stereotypes and generalizations and, well, FREAKING LIES, in it. It says that "all white voters would have refused to vote for Obama because of his race. It continues to say that Obama made race a part of his campaign, and that is why he won."

Now, I realize as you guys will that quoting a blog is hardly reporting.. but people are buying into it anyway... and saying 'hey that source is a blog' doesn't really phase them... so ive come to you , the DU masses...
don't disappoint

Here: http://wonkette.com/534939/stupidest-man-on-the-internet-cant-accurately-read-a-4th-grade-library-book

As for it being compliant with Common Core Standards: "another ridiculous half-truth — as Hoft copypastes from his source, book is indeed “part of Scholastic’s ‘Reading Counts’ program acceptable to the controversial Common Core curriculum standards,” but all that means is that it meets some very general guidelines for vocabulary and complexity for the grade level, not, as is implied, that children will have pro-Obama propaganda crammed down their throats."

That way when it shows up on one of our right-wing relatives' facebook pages, we can get the debunking link from snopes and respond to them with it.

Evidently Daily Caller carried the original story and has since posted this update. I shall now go shower.

UPDATE: Jaci DeClue, a school board member in Dupo, has emailed The Daily Caller claiming that no one in Dupo is required to read a biography of President Barack Obama.

“This book was a donated book in the presidential section of our library that a student checked out and took home,” DeClue told TheDC. “It is not any part of the curriculum or been taught in any of our classes.”

The "offending" page, in full:

But some people said Americans weren’t ready for that much change. Sure Barack was a nice fellow, they said. But white voters would never vote for a black president. Other angry voices were raised. Barack’s former pastor called the country a failure. God would damn the United States for mistreating its black citizens, he said.

Barack decided it was time to speak to Americans about race. The country’s history of slavery had left the nation in pain, he said. Black people and while were too often angry with one another. All people were going to have to work together to solve the country’s problems. Only in that way could Americans make a more perfect United States.

It doesn't assert that "all white voters would have refused to vote for Obama because of his race" - it states that "some people" believed "white voters would never vote for a black president" - in other words, written for 4th graders, a perfectly accurate concern voiced by some pundits.

The book then tosses in the Rev. Wright story to set the stage for describing Obama's campaign speech on race. There's no claim that he made race "part of his campaign" (unless mentioning race at all constitutes doing so), nor is there a suggestion that doing so is "why he won."

The whole thing is based on deliberate misreading, on par with the "you didn't build that" trash. It's mostly self-debunking. If your friends don't have a 4th grader's reading comprehension level when it comes to anything Obama-related, your task is hopeless!

... written in his home state of Hawai'i.
"A President from Hawai'i" by Joanna and Terry Carolan
Barack Obama is the first United States President to be born in Hawai‘i, the Aloha State. A President from Hawai‘i -- originally distributed exclusively in that state -- explores the unique history and cultural traditions of President Obama’s birthplace. In addition to the well-known concept of aloha, it introduces such Hawaiian concepts as kokua (to help), lokahi (unity), and ohana (family), among others, and includes quotes from Barack Obama’s speeches, books, and interviews that reflect and embrace these themes.

Of course, that's not what they're looking for, but sometimes I just try to bury the idjits in facts.
