Obama speaking now, just said he was privileged to know Roger Ebert who suffered through some really difficult times. He said Ebert was known for saying "Kindness covers all of my political beliefs. No need to spell them out. I believe that if, at the end, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do"
Obama said he feels that way too. He gets up every day with that same mindset... governing with kindness and empathy, showing an understanding for people in their situations, being a part of making them succeed. That's what motivates him.
I believe this is why Obama is so loved. He is human. He is a real person. And he genuinely cares about people.
Ebert's full quote:
Kindness covers all of my political beliefs. No need to spell them out. I believe that if, at the end, according to our abilities, we have done something to make others a little happier, and something to make ourselves a little happier, that is about the best we can do. To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts. We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try. I didnt always know this and am happy I lived long enough to find it out.
