Before the ink was dry, and in some cases before the papers were even signs, Republicans came out guns blazing against President Obama and the agreement with Iran. Some of them are calling this the biggest mistake in history, while others are comparing President Obama to Neville Chamberlain. Hypocrisy is shining brighter that Reagans proverbial city on the hill as the neocons are evading the fact that this is a multilateral treaty thats been in the works for months, while attempting make the claim that President Obama is giving in to terrorists and using the accord as a way to distract from ObamaCare.
To understand the depth of Republican hypocrisy, we must take a trip back to President Reagan and his dealings with Iran. When President Reagan was inaugurated, within hours the Iranian hostage crisis came to an end. Originally, Republicans tried to spin this as Iran was afraid of the big bad wolf in the White House. It came out later that Reagan officials, behind the scenes, were working with Iran to release the hostages after President Carter left office. In return for the good press, President Reagan unfroze Irans American assets and opened up a yard sale at the Pentagon where Iranians could get good deals on TOW missiles.
Whether or not these deals were cut by officials of the Reagan campaign prior to the election in other words, whether or not Bill Casey et. al. committed something like treason by undermining American foreign policy in order to win an election is still very much an open question. But there were, ahem, precedents.
This led to the Iran-Contra scandal, in which the trade of arms for hostages was revealed. It was also discovered that some of those arms went to Nicaraguan contra rebels, at a time when Congress prohibited such aid. President Reagan attempted to deny the deal, while also admitting that it happened. During a nationally televised address, President Reagan spun more than an elliptical trainer and said:
