Not only were GOP people known for trying to haggle hotel rates that were already low, but contractors made a point to try and discourage GOP types from actually doing things in the city. In part, that was because Ron paul was threatenign all sorts of mayhem.

(41,694 posts)Like Henry Cisneros said when he was mayor of San Antonio and the Southern Baptists had their convention there. "They showed up with the Ten Commandments and a $10 bill and vowed to break neither one of them"

Since the GOP did not dare venture out of their pre programmed flight path, none of the city seemed to show on the national leve, and this is a place that hosts Super Bowls on a semi regular basis.

(13,616 posts)even though the supporters were demmayors Iorio and Buckner. They thought it would increase buisness, but ask any resturant owner what the convention was like. People lost money bigtime, because the GOP would do thing like make a makeshift club district out of vacant buildings, so that no one would go downtown. Contractors got the money, not local citizens. Thw whole convention acted like a parasite host.
And no, the Hurricane was not the sole answer, as Tampa looked even more like a ghost town after the storm blew over.
