Whats the state capital of Squaresies?
When all else fails, draw pretty pictures.

RIP, Midwest.

They need to close the border to Nickelback, STAT.

(11,045 posts)It is really tough for them, but some eventually pick it up.
I can do it regionally, alphabetically, or randomly. I can pass the third grade!

(8,830 posts)students (varying ages) - it's a mixed bag. Some are very good, some are completely clueless . . . most are deficient but aware that they should know more.
I'm impressed with your ability - I have no problem with the states or S. America; more issues with the capitals; get confused over which "stan" is where and am abysmally poor with Africa and China's provinces!

(24,324 posts)oh 6-7 times. Some of the provinces in the 'middle' I still get wrong. The food I NEVER get wrong.. UMMM hau chu !!!

(6,059 posts)(early 90's) We were given a quiz that was similar... except we were given a blank piece of paper and asked to draw a map of the US. I think I was only missing 1 state, can't remember where, it was likely along the east coast somewhere.
I think it's interesting to note what people associate with each state - coming from Minnesota, one of those brits must have visited, to link "pop" with MN.

(1,389 posts)...a couple of weeks ago. A quarter of them couldn't point to the Pacific Ocean. Astounding!!!

(570 posts)I remember in 9th grade being given a blank map and being asked to label as many countries, continents, oceans, rivers, or other major geographical landmarks as we could. A few of the students in a "G/T" class had left the map all but blank. One girl sitting next to me had labeled South America as Africa.

(13,776 posts)So is the OP--I'm amazed and very, very impressed that people in a whole other country could find anything other than California and Florida. Just imagine if Americans were asked to label the Canadian provinces... and I'll be the first to say I would humiliate myself if I tried so I hope it never comes up.

Well done Brits on your education system. I don't think most Americans could label any British cities outside of London.

Savannahmann
(3,891 posts)A local free paper decided to ask some questions of 100 people in the park in Savannah. One of the questions was to name the sea that was off of Tybee Island. Now, these are people who live in Savannah Georgia, a Costal City, and Tybee Island and Sea should give many of you a hint even if you are not from Georgia since there is but one Sea anywhere that touches Georgia.
Many of them knew it wasn't called a Sea, and the most frequently given wrong answer was the Tybee Ocean.
Nearly half could not name one state that shared a border with Georgia. Note. South Carolina is fifteen minutes away from downtown Savannah, just across the River which was less than a mile from where these questions were asked. The fifteen minutes is for traffic to get to the Highway that takes you across the bridge.
Most of those questioned had no clue what happened if you combined two parts of Hydrogen to one part of Oxygen.
So I am ashamed that the Brits got the states of a nation they do not live in so right when I know that so many of my fellow Citizens would get even fewer correct.

(17,139 posts)I told they had to pass this test again at the end of the year to get credit for the class. They all did.
When I first gave it, even my best students were clueless. One put 'Montana' in West Virginia. The rest weren't much better.
The only student who got them all was an immigrant from Thailand.
I told them that if they ever travelled across country to take a bus or fly. If they tried it by car, they would never be seen again.

(36,385 posts)I got California, Florida, Hawaii, Alaska, New Jersey (that one was a fluke) and Texas...
http://www.jetpunk.com/quizzes/map-quiz-us-states.php
If I'd been able to label them by hand, I would have done a fair bit of vague arrows with 'it's around that bit somewhere, I think' and 'the white house is here but Washington's over there'. I don't get why the US has so many states, anyway, and especially all the squiggly line, tiny ones...
