Yes, That Is a Nipple on the Front Page of the New York Times.

GRAPHIC WARNING for link.

The New York Times may hold itself above the rest of the grubby news media, but Wednesday they proved that they're as dependent on WTF traffic as everyone else. Check out how the paper of record illustrated a story about breast cancer gene testing in Israel. Yes, that's a partial nipple you're looking at there. This image will, guaranteed, get far more discussion going online than the story underneath, which is about how common the breast cancer gene is in Israel and the impact that is having on Israeli society. But forget about all that. Within seconds of viewing this image, you will be expected to have an opinion about it. Here are the options to choose from:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2013/11/27/nipple_on_the_front_page_of_the_new_york_times_now_what_s_that_about_the.html

The actual story (again a graphic warning) is at http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/27/health/in-israel-a-push-to-screen-for-cancer-gene-leaves-many-conflicted.html

You have to get a "sports newspaper" to see that sort of thing-- and even then, the photos are pretty grainy.

When Ms. Horesh tested positive for a BRCA1 mutation, she said her husband supported her decision to surgically remove her ovaries and breasts. They had three young children to raise.

Finding a doctor to do it was another matter.

“The first doctor I went to said I was insane, and he said, ‘If you have brain cancer, are you going to chop off your head?’ ” said Ms. Horesh. “The second doctor said that he noticed I had a small chest, and he thought I just wanted an excuse to have my breasts enlarged.”

A third doctor told her what many women hear, “Come back when you have cancer,” and “Nobody dies of breast cancer nowadays.”

in case she does get breast cancer later.

Good idea there. Marry her off early so she can pass along any cancer-causing genetic mutations she may have.

The sad thing is, I saw lots of nipples growing up because women could breastfeed their babies in public back then without misogynist asshats throwing a fit. If anything in life has scarred me and scared me, it's Republicans, not nipples.

My 18 year old daughter has not tested yet. She says she wants to get tested, but she just hasn't done it yet. She wants a career and wants a family by the time she is 30. She even wants to be able to breast feed. But she has said if she tests positive she would get her breasts removed. I'm not sure how she will do all of this if she tests positive. I want her to do everything she wants to do, and I want her to be safe. I want her to get tested only because if she tests positive, she should at the very least be getting preventative screenings until she has made up her mind about surgery. I also have a son who will have to decide if he wants to get tested as well because men who test positive for the gene are at greater risk of certain cancers too, plus if they are a carrier there is a chance they can pass it on to their children. The fear never goes away. I had surgery and have less fear for myself although I know there is always a chance I could still get it. But now I have to fear for children.

I've been assured by very reputable sources funded by the religious right that the viewing of a naked woman produces dangerous erotoxins which cause human beings to go completely INSANE.
