There's all sorts of things like this - Child's Play comes to mind, for instance, or the numerous times MLP fans have powerhoused some charity or another. However, people of subcultures and off-groups being good members of society doesn't play for the media's interest in our "Deviancy" from the straight white jock norms.

if it doesn't suit the corporate narrative, it isn't news. "News" is owned by 6 corporations and all of them are so incestuous they probably couldn't give out a bonus check without divvying it up for child support and alimony.

the news media isn't very interested anymore. Oh, and if you are lying to the public, that is interesting news, see: Lara Logan, 60 minutes. Lying is apparently much more profitable than helping people on Thanksgiving.

It's a shame that generation and/or sub-culture is so easily dismissed as lazy, selfish or uncaring.

Good on them for helping!

of "power of the people". It paralyzes them into inaction on the story. They need the OK of their masters, and that OK never comes.

15. Did they do it for the recognition? Is recognition important to them? Am I missing something?

I've made charitable donations since I've been employed full-time, and I'm 52. It's never occurred to me that I should be recognized in any way.

I've worked in soup kitchens on holidays. I donated to Katrina victims. I took pallets of drinking water to the San Fernando Valley after the Northridge Earthquake and dropped them off across the street from the Northridge Arms Apartments.

The whole time I was in the Navy, we were told "You don't have to donate to the United Way, but here's the paperwork. We'll be back to pick it up in a few minutes."

Who does charitable things, then bellyaches for not being patted on the back for it?

Hey "Gamers"? If you need to be called "heroes"... You're "heroes". That good enough?

FFS.

MILLIONS of people make charitable donations EVERY FUCKING DAY. I dare say they're not doing it in order to be "recognized".

what they themselves gave.

"City of Industry, CA – November 11, 2013 – Thermaltake, being an industry leader in computer chassis, thermal solutions, and power supply units is happy to announce a huge success during its sponsorship of PDXLAN, The largest LAN Party on the west coast on November 8-10, 2013!

Unlike normal news where a new product may be shown or an award is given this time it is the gaming community which deserves major reward.

The gamers of PDXLAN in November numbering only 400 culmulatively donated over 37,000 Lbs of food for local charities which will in turn ensure families in need will recieve meals during the sometimes tough holiday season. This is a huge moment which deserves recognition as many times the media will portray gaming or gamers as a violent group due to the nature of games which they play. I believe this kind of activity or as Matt "Vector" Conwell the PDXLAN owner/Organizer put it "Gamers Give Back" is an excellent statement to show people as a whole that gamers are great people who care about one another and just love to have fun playing the games they enjoy.

Kudos to them for giving so much as a group, and boo! to the media for not giving them the props they so richly deserve.
