I see this as a perfect time to do it.
My grandfather is 98 and it might be his last Thanksgiving with the family. My brother and his wife are bringing their 2-month-old baby for her first big family gathering, and to introduce the little one to members of our extended family, many of whom are traveling here for their annual visit to our hometown. A cousin of mine got engaged Saturday, and she'll be bringing her fiancé to meet members of our family who haven't met him yet.
In so many ways it will be a special and happy time. Great time for some political canvassing!

(45,358 posts)We have a no-politics rule as well, but I'm planning on being thankful for the less fortunate finally having access to healthcare and the big step forward we just took towards real, lasting peace in the Middle East.

(16,834 posts)My dad and brother will be bitching about Democrats at some point. I wish nobody would even bring that shit up, but I know they will. I won't do it. They always get offended by something I say when they do bring it up. I really wish my family could gather without talking about politics at all.

(23,478 posts)much smarter than me. He's not crazy right wing. He votes dem and republican depending on the election. I always think of things to say in the car ride home.
I having been reading some of our talking points.
I'm thinking the big discussion would be more Iran than health care. He is a zionist.
But, if he doesn't bring it up, I sure won't.

(46,179 posts)When I get to spend a day with my loved ones, whatever the reason that brings us together, we aren't going to be talking politics. We're going to be enjoying each other's company. We'll talk about a lot of things, but politics will be off the table.
If it were on the table, there would be mild disagreements between the Democrats, the extreme leftist, the single libertarian, and the anarchist, but nobody in my family cares more about politics than each other, and nobody would let political disagreement divide them.

(11,441 posts)Are you trying to provoke them? If so, why not just enjoy the holiday without potential divisiveness (it can be done). Do you plan on saying "Obamacare" when everyone goes around the table and states what they're thankful for? Will you educate folks? Change hearts and minds? Or just piss people off?
Why bother. Just enjoy the food, football and parades. Help clean up the dishes. Nap. Take a walk.
Ah, so thankful for my family...

(224 posts)And my post was in jest. This is a terrible fucking idea.

(11,441 posts)It's goofy.
Fortunately my family is insured, but if I were in a family with someone in need of coverage, I'd gently broach the subject and offer to help. Not sure who these folks at OFA are, and who they think some silly pledge will appeal to. Oh, wait, I can think of a group on DU who must think it's a TREMENDOUS idea...

It's a fine day to discuss it, just don't dwell on it.
Enjoy the meal and the family.

(192 posts)On Obamacare. Before any of my husbands right wing family could say anything I said, "Nope. I'm losing my insurance because BCBS is just plain greedy!"
My mother-in-law asked me why and I had the opportunity to tell her that although my plan meets all the ACA guidelines and I signed up for it after the March 2010 grandfather date, BCBS is canceling it and forcing me to reapply to a crappier but more expensive policy to do away with the exclusion rider for a preexisting condition.
Because they can.
