Tony Rohr has been reinstated :)

Update on Elkhart, IN: we feel strongly that the situation involving our independent franchisee and the local store manager could and should have been avoided. We fully respect an employee’s right to not work on a holiday, which is why the vast majority of Pizza Huts in America are closed on Thanksgiving. As a result, we strongly recommended that the local franchisee reinstate the store manager and they have agreed. We look forward to them welcoming Tony back to the team.

however, I'm of the opinion that certain businesses are just greedy and need to treat their employees as human beings.

Gas stations are open, so people can travel to see their family's.

Grocery stores, people buying last minute holiday food items.

Taxi's. Subways. Airports. Get it?

According to you all these people should be able to refuse to work with no punishment.

The world is not a magical place. Sometimes people do not get what they want. I know I don't.

not just Thanksgiving, but Xmas and New Years.

That was part of the job.

And I had no problem with it.

Like your examples, that was an essential service.

I really don't see equating essential services to that of a non essential service.

Get it?

You do not get to determine that. I bet you want a government panel to determine these "essential" businesses. I doubt you realize how hard it would be. Have not thought 10 minutes about it.

Wow, maybe let the business decide. And the people who work for them can decide if they want to work there based on their holiday schedule.

LOL, you using the internet today means your internet provider is working. Are these post essential??

Get it now??

Thanksgiving and Christmas was a skeleton crew..and MOST if not all were volunteers..I had a family and never worked those two holidays, but I did volunteer to work late on New Years Eve and worked New Years Day so the singles could have that time off...

It worked out perfectly with no one complaining they were forced to work on holidays.

I worked for an airline for a number of years and my function where at the reservation desk or at the airport were essential because we needed to serve passengers traveling on the holiday or beyond. My father worked for an oil company his entire career and whether he was in drilling or production he often worked holidays because you can't stop pumping and producing oil or stop a drilling rig in the middle of a well simply because it is a holiday. Hospitals, fire and police departments, etc. are essential. The need for those services doesn't go away simply because we have decided to make a day on the calendar a holiday.

But I would argue a pizza restaurant, a Wal-Mart and even a grocery store, are not essential services to be open on a holidays. What's the worst that can happen if your turkey burns up? You make P&B sandwiches, not order delivery pizza. What happens if you forgot to buy whipping cream for the pumpkin pie? You eat it without whipped cream and kick yourself in the butt for not making your list. What happens if Wal-Mart doesn't open until 0600 on Friday? You can't jostle and fight your way in to buy foreign-made crap until Friday morning. The world is not going to come to an end except for the owners of Wal-Mart who are already so filthy rich they have more personal wealth than most of the nations in the world.

I hope this young man has seen the handwriting on the wall and will start pursuing something else. The franchise may have brought him back but it is only to smooth over his relations with Pizza Hut and the public image but they will find a reason to fire this man soon, very soon. He is an "at will" employee and can be let go for largely any reason except for things like race and religion. They will either contrive a reason to fire him or will just wait until the smoke clears and then fire again.

mean, at least to me, that pizza servers must work. Even Pizza Hut thought people should be home with their families. It was just the one greedy franchise owner that wanted to squeeze out another nickel. I am sorry that you arent more sympathetic, especially at this time of year.

I lived for 6 years in Germany and did fine with NOTHING but a gas station here or there being open on Christmas. We can survive.

even more they had never had to work before on Thanksgiving; the notice that they would have to work was given only a few days before T-day—their families had already made plans; and it was a non-sensical request as they wpuld not have taken enough orders to warrant their opening

When I was in my 20s (before a college education that I finally finished when I was 45 yrs old), I worked as a cook/waitress and anywhere else that would employ me. I also started a secretarial job that paid 5 bucks an hour and went to those restaurant jobs after putting in 40 hrs. Jobs were pretty easy to get in those fields because the pay was low and I was good at what I did. I was single and didn't have children or a significant other so I was always expected to not ask for the days off because really, what family did I have anyway?

Of course, my teabagger sister had a fit one year when I had to work Christmas eve and couldn't make it to the family celebration until nearly 5pm. She was livid! How dare I delay the family plans for her and her expectations. I had to work until after the lunch rush, go home, take a shower and put the few gifts I could afford in the car and get there. To this day, I'll never forgive her for making me feel like shit that day when I would have loved to have had the day off to cook for the family, spend time with them instead of earning slave wages so that I could eat the next day. She has no concept that people that have to work holidays, holiday eves and for freaking pennies and be thankful that I never once asked for help financially. Well, until a tooth abscessed and I had to call my Mother and ask for 300 dollars to get it root canal. She asked why I was crying and I said because I promised myself I would do without rather than ask for help. She said, it's your teeth, not a new tv!

I've read your comments on this thread and you reminded me of my sister. I hated waiting on people like you.
