But it died doing what it loved best. ISON tried to please everyone but fate intervened and all that's left is to pray that it is now in heaven. Wait...it was already "in" heaven. So. We must go forward with our lives and let ISON rest in pieces. I mean peace. So long young friend. We hardly knew ya. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to The Society for the Prevention of Comets crashing into the Sun.

(4,886 posts)and to put this up is just sick.
I wont "lighten up" you need to pull this or send it to the lounge.
It was in very poor taste and worse timing.

(22,457 posts)You dragged that into this thread, no one else. Way to try your best to create drama where none previously existed.

(15,064 posts)Death is tragic. I too have lost family very close to me and feel badly for the person losing their son.
Referring to an object that was never alive as dying has always been funny to me in the same way that robotic voices on the phone always say "Thank you for calling." or "We appreciate you as a customer." is funny because a, robotic, computerized voice is not a person with feelings who really gives a rat about your personal feelings or whether you should be thanked or appreciated.
ISON is a comet that was followed by many people, like me, who are fascinated with space. It was destroyed by the Sun and I feel, as others do, that I wished it had hung around a little longer to enjoy. It would have made this Christmas even more special.

(12,448 posts)It could have dimmed a bit as ISON flew by, but no. It didn't care. It just didn't care.

(13,141 posts)Or at least the Comet was drawn to
the Sun, who welcomed it.
There was an irresistible urge.
Sometimes it's just time to go,
for a heavenly body to transform.
We will have our time too. Not the Sun's fault.
It just shines and shines.

(40,416 posts)Its orbit was a hyperbola which means this is the only time it's been inside our solar system. It also means that if it had survived it would have never returned.
Phil Plait wrote the other day that it is rather smaller than originally thought, only about a mile in diameter, not very big as new comets go.
Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
