Back in the old days, people would drop the turkey on their foot and fracture a toe, or slice open a finger trying to carve, but now the Big Thing is the exploding fried turkey that burns down the house!

(111,227 posts)with no trees overhead. I think most fires are started by oil spillage, so it's better to have too little oil and need to top it up after the turkey is in the fryer than to have too much oil causing a conflagration. Even on a driveway, those are not fun.
And don't forget the fire extinguishers. Get two, they're small.
ETA: if it's raining, you need to forget the fryer and just roast that sucker.

(64,407 posts)Pitbulls are nothing as they didn't set any houses on fire. Only idiots have anything to do with turkeys. Exterminate them from the earth as they seek to only kill people.
Wait...what? No, really it has nothing to do with the owner/operator. I read it here on DU. A number of times.

(17,111 posts)you better damn well know what you are doing.
It can be done safely, but people need to follow a preparation and cooking checklist to the letter. They especially need to choose a very safe place so they won't burn everything down. Even then, you better have a fire extinguisher ready for unforeseen circumstances.
A fire extinguisher should be required in kitchens anyway. It doesn't have to be the biggest one known to man.

(7,720 posts)deep frying turkeys. That fad has long since passed. The oil costs more than the turkey, what's the point?
My brother started his woodpile and attached garage in this manner. He's a cop and knows most of the firemen in his town. He was quite embarrassed, but he had the fire put out before the fire truck arrived.
