This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by uppityperson (a host of the General Discussion forum).
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Adele Bing, 52, told police she shot her daughter in a case of mistaken identity and that authorities should lock her up "for good" according to an arrest report.
Ruby Bing went to her mom's house on Monday night. Adele Bing told authorities her 26-year-old daughter was banging and kicking her door. Bing thought the person at the door was her boyfriend, whom she had just had a fight with. Bing armed herself with a .22 caliber gun, opened the door and shot her daughter in the chest, authorities said.
The baby was unharmed.
Bing told authorities her boyfriend had threatened to come back to her house and kill her.

(93,561 posts)they think the worst thing first or maybe they want to because they want to use their guns.
also why don't these people call the police ? this one and the case of the teenager who knocked on that guy's home after getting into an accident are cases where the person was outside of the home and these people just shoot not seeing who/what they are shooting at. and they don't think to even call the cops ?

(5,963 posts)If you walk around with money in your pocket, everyone you see is a cash register. If you walk around with food, everybody is a mouth to feed. Huh????
As for how so, sitting here making assumptions about the motivations of millions of millions of people, then from those assumptions making broad generalizations about those millions of people so you can feel superior to them is pretty ignorant in my book.

(4,489 posts)you wouldn't use them to kill a loved one. These kind of stories are common and will remain so, because in the US you don't have to have your shit together, or get much training to own a gun. If we had a dependable method of determining whether or not an individual could responsibly own a gun I think quite a few of the gun nuts out there would have to go without.

(9,854 posts)The reason everything is a nail when you have a hammer is because hammers are extremely limited in their use. Hammers are pretty much limited to banging in nails or removing them. Guns are also limited in their use. Pretty much all you can do with a gun is shoot something. Once the gun is out, your options are limited.

(9,854 posts)I am not sure your emotional reaction has much merit.
This young woman would be alive if her mother had not owned a gun and lived in an era which has led her to believe that itbis appropriate to lead with it in sketchy circilumstances.

(97 posts)The article says she opened the door and still shot her. We don't have the whole story...

(32,886 posts)So it naturally follows they are going to be more likely to perceive threats and believe those threats to be more serious than they are and needing a higher amount of force in response, specifically, the guns they own.

(628 posts)Sadly cases like this one are fairly common. The sensible solution is to increase firearm regulations, and make a number of rigorous training courses mandatory before being allowed to purchase or otherwise transfer a firearm. Personally I'd just ban guns all together. If people still want to hunt they can get into archery.

(4,185 posts)Which is why it's a news story. It's an extremely uncommon occurrence.
Their are 360 million guns in a nation of 308 million people.
renie408
(9,854 posts)The number of gun owners is less so. Most people own more than one gun. Only 34% of households in America have a gun.

(97 posts)"Which is why this story is anything but common"
The point I was trying to make not very well is we have sometimes 5 to 10 shootings a night
in major cites across the US.
It's a blip on the local paper and that's all it becomes.
Sometimes the MSM will run with a gun death story if they think it will bring ratings
but most times it's gone the next day because shooting deaths have become so common in the U.S
Boom Sound 416
(4,185 posts)No question gun violence is a daily occurrence in America. And no question that the msm only covers outrageous examples every now and then and in less than a 24 hour cycle.
My point is this (OP) occurrence is what's uncommon relative to gun violence.

Unfortunately many gun owners feel emboldened by their guns and see threats where none exist.
this is tragic and a symptom (on many levels) of a sick, sick society.

Bing armed herself with a baseball bat and a gun, police say, and as she opened the door, she accidentally fired a shot.
It was not Lane at the door, but Bing's daughter Ruby. The 25-year-old, who was holding her 4-month-old daughter, was hit in the chest and died at the scene...
An "accidental" shot to the chest that completely missed the baby? "Banging" on the door while holding a baby? If the door had a peep hole, why didn't Bing use it? The daughter didn't say anything along the lines of "Mom, it's me?" Was Bing expecting her daughter and grandchild at 8:45 PM? Did Bing ask, "Who is it?"
If Bing didn't want the boyfriend returning home, and he had threatened to kill her, why didn't she file domestic violence charges? And most important of all, if Bing thought there was a killer knocking on her door, WHY DIDN'T SHE KEEP IT CLOSED AND CALL THE POLICE? Ordinarily, I would consider this an open-and-shut case of voluntary manslaughter, but there's reason to suspect intent a conscious intent to kill.

Maybe the boyfriend could have dialed back the rhetoric or would it have damaged his masculinity too much?

(6,342 posts)Earlier the boyfriend was at the hospital getting treatment for a head wound where the girlfriend had hit him in the head with that same gun.
The police were called to the hospital. They began interviewing the boyfriend. While that was going on the woman shot her daughter. Which raises the question if the daughter didnt show up, would she had shot at the police when they knocked at the door?
