Fashionista with club foot has leg amputated – to wear high heels

There are many dedicated followers of fashion – but few would be willing to remove a body part.

However, Mariah Serrano chose to have her leg amputated to fulfil a dream of wearing high heels for the first time.

The 21-year-old was born with a twisted club foot and was told this would prevent her from ever donning her favourite shoes.

After years of excruciating pain and five operations, she decided to have the lower half of her left leg surgically removed after seeing a specialist in 2009.

I can't judge her for this, having a club foot makes ambulation difficult in general. Avalux Nov 2013 #7

Did she chop off her foot BECAUSE of fashion, or did she decide that there was a silver "fashion" lining to her decision to chop off her foot following "... years of excruciating pain and five operations..."

'years of excruciating pain and five operations' it may have been the best decision she could make. Being able to wear heels may be an added bonus.

So she tried to fix it first and that didn't work, then thought a lot about amputation before making the decision. Sounds as if it was the best decision for her and what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. As long as she's happy, good for her.
