my celebrations have always - for many years - been non-normative.
this year was notable for how 'mainstream' everyone was -- but extremely diverse.
we were:
* atheists
* christians
* jewish
*muslim
with an overlay of socially awkward gay scientists -- {i swear to god, i'm going to make every one of these guys wear a wig and a ball gown one of these days}
there were adopted asian children
lots of badly behaved dogs -- cause what's better to a dog than a crowd -- you can get away with anything.
***no one keeps kosher in any of the categories -- so wine AND sausage were consumed in quantities.
there was even 1 older student getting her masters of divinity who gave a very ecumenical, all inclusive grace.
the food for the feast ROCKED -- i worked 2 days at enormous stretches to fix it all.

(60,013 posts)For me, I was surrounded by four legged critters and women! Three dogs (one visiting), three cats (all ours), my wife, daughter, and my wife's best friend (recently divorced)...no politics (we are all very liberal), just great food, lots of laughs, some nostalgia, and the inevitable mixing of the pets with people....a fine day indeed (made all the more wonderful because our daughter continues her successful battle with an eating disorder - she loved the day, something that would have been unthinkable even as recently as 5 years ago).

(8,636 posts)Your guests sound like a really interesting, and probably erudite crowd. A far cry from the low-information conservative types that most of us have to endure at holiday times.
By the way, Good on ya' Mate for inviting a really great, diverse crowd.
Last thought: This could have the makings of a really fun movie!

(108,903 posts)they're not my friends.
but yesterday there was that connection between people you really hope for.
i blame the wine drinking muslims and pork eating jews. who all sat at the same table.

(10,597 posts)... that you had a lovely day, xchron. Same here, except that I only worked 6 hours on my fixins. And for the first time ever in my life, someone else did ALL the dishes and put everything away where it belonged. Peace surrounded our table as we are of the same mind politically (we vote as a bloc ) We enjoyed the dog show and all of the football games. Go Cowboys! Go Ravens! The only thing I was sad about the whole day was that the Packers lost.
