(14,087 posts)What looks to me like she's just watching what is going on. She is plenty accustomed to the President having to be in everyone's pictures.

My God, what is it with those stupid selfies anyways? I'm sorry, but I saw them taking those photos and I was wondering to myself...those are world leaders? It just looks immature.
Meh. It's all much ado about nothing, but still I think Obama could learn a thing or two from Michelle about decorum...

(23,273 posts)They're ALL looking at their phones. I was at a church service a few weeks ago. This was a Baptist, bible thumping, testifying, music fest of a service. The preacher was going at it, the crowd was answering "Tell it, preacher", "Uh-huh", "Go on". You could look down the row and 6 people in each row were fooling with their phones.

(5,810 posts)by my brother-in-law declaring, "Getting My Worship on at church this morning!" So I know he is sitting in the pew as the enters his post. Makes me wonder what his pastor thinks since he can see pretty much everything going on in the congregation from his vantage point!!
I swear it's an addiction. At family gatherings we have to have one of us announce that we're having an electronic free event or we risk not having everyone fully participating in an activity that took several hours to plan and carry out. Once engaged in the activity they are present and attend to what's going on, but if we don't insist that they put their phones aside, turn them off or mute them, they are distracted and half there. It is an insult to whoever planned an activity to have them do that. And I am talking about adults as well as teens and tweens.
It is having a profound impact on our culture and I'm not sure it's all good. I know, I know....... I fully qualify as an old poop, but when people would rather find out what someone put on their Facebook page or commented about than interact with the LIVE human beings in the room with them, THAT is a problem. And this includes places like church. Especially includes those places.
As you might observe....this is one of my pet peeves. And I text, have a Facebook page, etc. But I know when it is a good (appropriate) time to do those things and when it is NOT.
Oh, and in case anyone asks, I did not get my knickers in a twist over the President and the Selfie-gate kerfuffle. It was a CELEBRATION of Mandela's life. Not a funeral, per se. As for the First Lady...she just looked like she was looking around at the crowd and what was happening. Look at others who were in those pictures who were not aware their photo was being taken. They looked "angry", too, if that is what you call a rather blank expression. Give them a break, people. No one smiles all the time. Even the President had a somber look on his face at times.
