(1,741 posts)By default I am not offended if someone wishes me "Merry Christmas." But from a clerk in a shop I think "Happy Holidays" is more sensitive. It's the same as singing "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" in a public school. I don't think the non-Christians are going to be permanently traumatized by it. It's certainly not in the same ballpark as "Joy to the World" or something like that. But wouldn't it be nicer to sing one of the winter songs that don't allude to Christmas, even to the Santa stuff? Likewise a clerk in a shop saying "Merry Christmas" isn't the end of the world, but if I knew the owners of the store were right-wingers who totally bought into the "War on Christmas" crap and who considered "Happy Holidays" to be a liberal plot, I'd take the "Merry Christmas" from the clerks in a different way. Of course I probably wouldn't be shopping at that store to begin with, but you see my point I hope.

(10,039 posts)Here's a nice Christmas song that they sung a lot as I was a child.
Joy to the world, the teachers dead.
We barbecued her head!
What happened to her body?
We flushed it down the potty.
And round and round it goes,
and round and round it goes.
And ROUND it goes.
Yeah, that's pretty awful!

(15,628 posts)Mine eyes have seen the glory of the burning of the school
We have tortured every teacher and have broken every rule
We have hung up Mrs. Blazek and we hung her by her toes
And cut off her long nose
Glory glory hallelujah, teacher hit me with a ruler
I bopped her on the beanie with a rotten tangerenie
And she'll never teach no more
(Mrs. Blazek was my grade school principle back in the 60's; I didn't write the lyrics, but I still remember them 45 years later)
that a neutral greeting like Happy Holidays is probably best, and its what I used when I was in customer facing positions (except when I know for a fact they celebrate a particular holiday).
As a Jew who grew up in the deep south, I was just happy when I wasn't singing 'Silent Night' or 'Hark the Harold' in a school event.
As late as the mid 80's in a relatively progressive district we we still had teacher led (or student teacher selected) prayer to Jesus every lunch. I still remember getting sent to the principals office when I was asked to say the prayer for the class. Baruch atah A-donay, Elo-heinu Melech HaOlam Hamotzi lechem min haaretz was the only food prayer I knew....

This is one of those times.
It is not the words;
It IS the sentiment,
and I appreciate anyone wishing me kindness and happiness
however they choose to say it.
