And,

had trouble getting guests to understand that it is NOT ok to throw their butts on the ground at my home.

I got 28 acres of land here, and if I see a butt from a previous owner or visitor, I pick it up.

I found a more effective way than asking/telling people not to throw butts on the ground.

Without a word, I walk over, pick up the offensive butt, and put it in an ashtray or the garbage.

Most are immediately apologetic,

and ALL of them get the message.

CC

ps: also have a "3 butt max" policy regarding ashtrays - after the 3 (usually just 2 though) butts cool, into a can by the door, empty can into an OUTSIDE can twice daily (nowhere near full - emptied anyways).

I heard there was talk of banning smoking in the state parks around here because of the mess they leave behind.

they went to 60 cents a pack.
I said screw this and quit. I kept a pack with me at all times just in case. Finally they made it to my glove box in my car. A year or so later I was in my glove box and noticed that at some point I got so close to smoking a cigarette that I had opened the pack but it still had 20 in it so I hadn't. Just think of all the money I've saved since then. I was a two pack a day smoker when I smoked.

Several years ago I quit the bottle where I was drinking something like 7 or 8 dollars worth of booze a day on average so just think how much money I've saved on that too.
Actually our bank account does reflects some of those savings too.

(I went with the Blu e-cig, for me it was the most satisfying) I cut down from a carton a week to two packs. After the first couple days I started smoking just a few puffs at a time on the regular cigs just to get the taste. I slowly weaned myself off the regulars over the course of about a month and am now on e-cigs only. It wasn't real hard, and the e-cig cartridges come in different levels of nicotine so you can slowly wean off of that too. I'm actually enjoying the e-cig at the moment, but I figure I'll give it up eventually. It's half the cost of cigarettes but that still adds up quick... and you still get dirty looks if you are not discreet about it.

I like smoking, tell the truth. Friends joke about it - pinto just likes to smoke, makes no bones about it. But age, concurrent health concerns - tar, additives - and finances come calling. Nicotine in and of itself is fine with me. I'm going to try some e-cigs, see how it goes.

the first time I tried to quite because of bronchitis I picked it up again after one month of not smoking...I am now at about 2 months..and I have no desire to smoke...but I do use 24mg of nicotine..in order to keep my desire for smokes under control...

I plan to move down s l o w l y.....because..it is more import to me to keep of cigs..than to keep off nicotine

$10.81 for 16 oz. of pipe tobacco.

16 oz of pipe tobacco = 3 cartons of cigarettes.

$2.49 for 1 box of 250 tubes.

$2.49 X 3=$7.47. 150 tubes left over.

$10.81 + $7.47=$18.28 for 3 cartons of cigarettes.

Pipe tobacco 16 oz. $10.81 versus cigarette tobacco 16 oz. $59.00

If you smoke roll your own using pipe tobacco.

De-industrialize tobacco and turn it into a legal cottage industry. It would provide a lot of employment.

It sounds like they found the price for their premium brand cigarettes in a vending machine...at an airport.

We po' folks know how to find them a buck or two cheaper than that. Broke and addicted to nicotine does not equal stupid. Just sayin'.

I snuffed out my last Camel non filter about six years ago. I used to chain smoke hand rolled smokes for about 25 or 30 bucks a week. Stress lately has caused me to start a cigar habit that I am getting over at the moment. Damn you nicotine.
