She said "Hey kids, Santa is just White, that's a fact."
Obviously aimed at minority children who might think Santa is more like them. So telling minority children to just accept a white Santa is funny how?

(237 posts)but perhaps I'm wrong. I just seem to remember that Santa Claus (such as he is) originated with the Dutch.

The Velveteen Ocelot
(131,199 posts)The modern character of Santa Claus is derived from the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas, which, was based on stories about the historical figure of Christian bishop (and gift giver) St. Nicholas, who was a Greek living in what is now Turkey. The way Santa Claus is usually depicted in the U.S. comes from the 19th century poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas." So, given the way he has been traditionally described since then, I suppose you could say that description is basically of a white guy. But since he's really just a fantasy figure, to describe him as white as a matter of "fact" is just stupid. A fantasy Santa certainly can be of any race at all.

(37,514 posts)Santa Lucia ritual from Scandinavia. I have a Swedish friend who has a Santa Lucia party every year. It is quite a beautiful spectacle. The woman walks through the house with only the candles for light singing xmas songs. Though now many use electric candles.
