"Duck Dynasty" star Phil Robertson told GQ, unsurprisingly, that he doesn't get the whole gay thing.
"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men," Robertson told GQ's Drew Magary in the magazine's Janurary issue.
He then went on to describe, in detail, why he, a self-proclaimed vagina-loving man, doesn't understand the attaction.
So there's that. Oh, and also, he explained why blacks were happy during the Jim Crow days in Louisiana.
"Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash," Robertson said. "They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, 'I tell you what: These doggone white people'not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues."
After getting called on the carpet for these gems, Robertson released an

I sneered at her.
Now that I hear about the homophobia and racialism, I know why she likes the show.

(4,876 posts)From the Karaoke shows, Idol, Voice, X Factor, to the Housewives who are apparently now "celebrities", to these "Swamp" reality shows, to the DNA test results shows my wife watches incessantly (Maury, Steve Wilkos etc..) TV is a wasteland of really stupid shit.
Were it not for HBO Showtime and AMC I probably wouldn't watch TV at all.
I did like this clueless bit about "the blacks": "They're singing and they're happy".

(77,324 posts)Robertson also shares an interesting rationale for voting for Mitt Romney over President Obama, saying he favored the candidate because he was from Salt Lake City, a safer city than Chicago. "Where would I rather be turned around at 3 o'clock in the morning?" he said. As Magary points out, Romney, though a Mormon, hails from Boston.

From my understanding, these guys live out in the woods and make duck calls. What am I missing that's so amazing about a family of duck hunters? That doesn't seem very interesting imo

(3,194 posts)Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are on the lower end of the scale.
Remember, stupid folk are citizens too, and the majority of them have nothing better to do than watch shows on tv which were designed to reach, at most, their low level of intellect.

(53,194 posts)Phil Robertson was the starting quarterback for the Louisiana State University Tigers for two seasons but gave up his shot at NFL riches - he was recruited by the Washington Redskins, when the Redskins were still good - because football conflicted with hunting. How good was he? When Robertson was still on the team, Terry Bradshaw (the first quarterback to win four Super Bowls) was second on the depth chart.
In 2012, these guys' company had $40 million in revenues. Plenty of it comes from licensing, but they make a shitload of money selling duck calls.
People watch this show for the same reason they watched the Beverly Hillbillies: to city folk, country folk are hysterically funny.

(10,000 posts)Call the Duck Dynasty crew what you want. Two things are true: they know their audience, and they aren't idiots. The remarks they made promote the show in the minds of people who make up their key demographics. Those who are offended represent demographics that don't watch the show anyway. There will be a counterfeit apology; howls of outrage; calls for a boycott; graphics on Facebook circulating about God-hating liberals demanding that A & E cancel the show, and how you should "like and share" if you love Jesus and are happy, happy, happy about what Duck Dynasty represents.
Meanwhile they sell more DD emblazoned stuff at Wal Mart.

I'll say it again: this is a publicity stunt. He knew exactly what the reaction would be when he said those things to GQ, and he knew it would fire up his fan base.
