(68,202 posts)Now that I'm retired I have decided that in terms of priority anyone who does work directly for me, such as my house helper, should get priority, right after my family members, for a holiday present. I need and depend on their help, now that my husband and I are older and really need the help we get.

(918 posts)and non-union jobs and always received a Christmas bonus. Usually one week's pay, sometimes more.
Of course, I haven't had a real job since 1981.
My daughter has been in a new job since August and she got 1/2 week's pay.

(14,524 posts)... I go from temp agency status to actual employee at almost full time and a dollar more an hour. (35 hrs week)
And a turkey.
At age 60 after 4 years without a job at all, seems a very good bonus to me.

(7,401 posts)I came up with some lame excuse to pay them in advance as independent contractors helping out before we open on Jan 1. A stupid business decision on paper but I can sleep.

(1,621 posts)I have a job and will get a modest bonus. It would be a little bigger, but my boss buys a flat screen TV with some of the potential bonus money and gives each employee one chance of winning it in a drawing at the Christmas party, which devolves into a greed fest. I don't have to attend the party to get the bonus, but I would need to make arrangements to get it at another time.
What really sucks is that everyone has to save as much vacation time as possible for the end of the year because the shop is closed from Christmas Eve until Jan 2nd. New employees with 3-5 days of vacation per year are pretty much screwed.

(17,437 posts)I figure their cost at about half that since I can only use it at our stores. So a little less than one hour's pay out of their pockets.
I also got a coupon for a $15 turkey or ham for Thanksgiving.
I have rarely gotten any kind of bonus. I remember one time where we all chipped in $10 for the owner of a store I worked at. He in turn gave us each $20. Stupid system.

(25,667 posts)We are a small non profit hospice. CEOs and CNAs make the same bonuses and PTO etc. The sequester cut what medicare pays us so we have to wait and see if any bonus to our 401k goes through.

(30,481 posts)Some got much more. I gave it to them in the first week of December to lessen their holiday stress. I have an amazing group of people working with me every day. It is not the only bonus they get during the year.

LWolf
(46,179 posts)I'd give it back in a heartbeat if we could do away with the current ed deforms that led to that "bonus."
I got my bonus for my students' standardized test scores. It's a required part of a federal grant my district took, selling our professional ethics down the river for cash in strapped times.
I don't support high stakes testing of any kind. I don't support the use of test scores to threaten and browbeat teachers or students, or to narrow curriculum, or to politically control public education.
My bonus will: 1. Pay for the plumbing repairs necessary when temperatures plunged to -17 recently. 2. Donate to the pool that our certified staff will form to voluntarily share with classified, since the grant doesn't recognize the work of support staff. 3. Go to a couple of local organizations trying to get the homeless and other poor and at-risk people through the winter.

But then his company is a union company (my husband is mgmt..not union)..and they rarely lay any of their staff off,,,,even in lean times.
Bonuses are strictly based on profit...and length of service. The company gives everyone a list of all the jobs done and the profits, so when bonuses are "light", they know why..
We are happy with anything extra...and everyone also gets some cash in with the xmas card (usually $500-1000) and $100 gift cards from a supermarket chain

(36,063 posts)I did have a job that gave annual bonuses in lieu of raises to avoid increases in benefits chained to raises.
It seems that they may have missed an opportunity to look charitable at the solstice.

(24,146 posts)it's been a hundred bucks in the past. the first few years it was included in my paycheck, so it was taxed. the last few years it's been cash.
my last job was for a giant media company and we got $25 walmart gift cards. they were cheap assholes.
