(13,184 posts)Except the letters to the editor in the local rag tell me different.
Still, it seems like every rural property has a pot garden.
But prices are low, so I read about folks getting busted on I-80 in Nebraska and Illinois and Ohio, taking those loads Back East where they're worth some real money.

(10,440 posts)In 2012, 5.4 million persons aged 12 or older used marijuana on a daily or almost daily basis in the past 12 months (i.e., on 300 or more days in that period), which was an increase from the 3.1 million daily or almost daily marijuana users in 2006 (Figure 2.15). The number of daily or almost daily users of marijuana in 2012 represented 17.0 percent of past year users.
That might be half of California's number... certainly not the nations..... 5 million pot smokers? that's ridiculous.

(3,747 posts)medical and recreational in Colorado? I've often wondered.

(21,898 posts)Shops selling for recreational will start doing so in the new year... Not sure of the exact date, may be the 1st. It's legal for recreational now but I don't think you can buy it for that yet. Many shops that sell medical will not sell for recreational... Last I saw, there will only be about 100 selling recreational to start. Also, recreational will have state and local taxes added on that the medical does not have, so it will cost a bit more (it's still wicked cheap though). Other then that... It's the same weed.

(21,898 posts)I can get an once of what they call 'joint mix' for $70. What this is, is the shake from all of the jars at the end of each day, collected together and sold in ounces. When I first came out here and got a red card, I thought this was the shit... I was wrong.
What I would now term average weed, you can get for $120 - $160 an ounce. Really nice buds that if I do three bowls through my vaporizer (that equals about 1 average sized joint), I am very nicely stoned for the entire evening.
Then there is the serious top shelf stuff... $180 - $220 an ounce. This is awesome buds that I had only ever seen in places like High Times before... Beautiful colors that run through seriously sticky buds. 1 bowl through my vaporizer and I'm stoned out of my gourd with little motor function and hoping I don't have to try and find the bathroom for a few hours... Great for extended gaming sessions or if I'm going to watch a few movies.
If I am recalling correctly... The taxes for recreational is going to add in the neighborhood of 30% to the price. IMO, even at $300 an ounce for primo shit... I call that a good deal.

smoked pretty much daily since '68.
VA made me quit in order to continue to get the meds I need
I quit smoking tobacco in august of '77 and quit drinking liquor in april '07
By far the easiest to quit was the weed. Although quiting all three was relatively easy due to the fact I wanted too.
still have a bottle of liquor under the sink if my wife hasn't thrown it out by now.
No weed on the place though.

(1,241 posts)ALL VA clinics that are in states that have medical marijuana cannot refuse treatment if you have a legal card. Veterans for Medical Marijuana Access, Michael Krawitz google it. They have been to congress a couple times. Another good one is the Undersecretary of the Navy, Doctor Kerns, or Doctor Petzel both miracle workers with medical marijuana. They wrote the directive 2010-35 allowing us to use marijuana and be prescribed opiates. I'm even going to ask my VA doctor to sign my renewal card. I don't know if the spineless little puppet will do it, but we'll see. You have to write letters to the right people about your human rights violation.

(1,241 posts)for about 45 years now. Neuropathy pain 24/7. I don't wake up at 3:00 in the morning and take a couple puffs because I want to get high, it works for the pain and sleep. Yep I started recreationally, it's not only medicine, it is also enjoyable.

(1,241 posts)one day it will come and never go away. I remember like it was yesterday the last time I could feel my feet, I can't touch them and feel anything, I have stepped into a way too hot bathtub and didn't know nothing until I tried to sit down. Clumsy, my brain has no communication with my feet. I never know where my feet are at. Legs ache bad and night time restless leg and body syndrome as my neuropathy has gone all over. My hands, my face is numb. But the pain can't be described. You can't feel your feet but you can only feel pain, it doesn't make sense because it is your nervous system. Ever stick your hand in ice water for as long as you can? That is some of the pain. I stub a toe and break it but don't know for a couple days it feels weird and it's swollen and purple. Several times.
The marijuana helps calm electrical shocks and the convulsions of the nerves that come with neuropathy. Eating marijuana works better medically for neuropathy than smoking it. More concentrated.

(39,376 posts)I thought numb meant not being able to feel anything...HA
I can't feel much, but I do feel the itch that you can't scratch. I've been told about Lyrica (but that shit's expensive). Right now I just pop flexorill (muscle relaxers) a few times a day.
I'd love to live in a rational state that allowed me to use marijuana. Florida has a group trying to get it on the ballot, but I doubt the state supreme court will allow it even if it gets the requisite number of signatures.
sorefeet
(1,241 posts)but the itch that you can't scratch will drive you nuts. I have used everything from 16 grit sandpaper to a cigarette lighter to try and stop the itch. Really hot baths help. Lyrica didn't work at all for me. Plus it has bad side effects and was originally for convulsions and epilepsy. It's hydrocodone and marijuana for me. Opiates suck too.

(28,784 posts)Tho there are a lot of cannabinoids. This is a big area of study at this time, in fact, since scientists recognized the endocannabinoid system, the two best known are THC and CBD. THC acts more upon the brain while CBD acts upon organs - based upon the cannabinoid receptors located throughout the body.
Some people find cannabis with a lot of THC makes them feel paranoid and uneasy. Most cannabis these days is bred to maximize THC. THC and CBD are found in the same plant in relation to one another, so, more THC means less CBD. While people used to smoke/share an entire cigarette in the past, these days a person uses small amounts...a tip of the pinkie finger-worth...so you may have gotten more THC than was comfortable. If you have a history of schizo-affective disorders in your family, you might want to skip cannabis all together, or skip cannabis with a lot of THC. Some doctors are looking at CBD as treatment for schizophrenia - but not THC.
It takes about 10 seconds for THC to begin to show effects when inhaled, but this builds over an hour or more (less CBD means THC remains psychoactive longer). People should wait for thirty minutes or after one inhalation to see how they feel, especially if they have not consumed cannabis for a while.
You may have tried something with a level of THC that wasn't compatible with your body chemistry. If you're ever curious and in a position to experiment, you could try something with a 50/50 of the two. In any case, if someone feels uncomfortable, they should take deep breaths and remind themselves that the feeling will pass - and it does, within two to four hours. Those initial uncomfortable feelings can go away for some people who experience them.
CBD is the "anti-THC" of cannabis and it has calming and relaxing properties. It's also the component people find most useful for a lot of inflammatory diseases, although THC is also an anti-inflammatory and recommended for neuropathy.
At one point, a pharma co looked at synthetic CBD for weight loss because it doesn't give people munchies. High CBD cannabis is becoming a "thing" again because of its incredible capacity to halt or reduce seizures for people with epilepsy, including children. So, for nearly twenty years, cannabis was bred to maximize THC. Now it is also being bred to maximize CBD for medical usage.

(28,784 posts)from this link upthread - http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=4199828
From the 2012 census - U.S. population - 313,914,040 / under 18 years 23.5% / 76.5% over the age of 18.
This is from a 2012 govt survey by age -
12 to 17 - 7% for females, 7.5% for males
18-22 - 24% (college students only 22%) - all illicit drugs, tho the majority of this figure is for marijuana.
26 to 50- 5.3%
50 to 54 - 7.2%
55 to 59 - 6.6%
60 to 64 - 3.6%
Of the 21.5 million current illicit drug users aged 18 or older in 2012, 14.6 million (67.9 percent) were employed either full or part time. This includes all illicit drugs, but the numbers of users of things other than marijuana is tiny.
~~~~
For comparison - A 2013 Gallup survey said 38% had tried marijuana at some point in life. Here's a breakdown over the years (based on a sample size of more than a thousand.)
When asked if someone currently used, the number was 7%. Here's a breakdown by categories. The usage figures for young adults is a lot smaller here than the govt survey.
More people who came of age in the 1970s and 1980s (56%) smoked pot when they were younger and these same groups show increases in usage as more liberal laws are passed, according to the govt. survey. Those who came of age in the 1990s who used marijuana were 46% of the population. Those who came of age before them continued to use at the rate of 45%. Those who came of age in the 1970s through the 1990s continue to show high usage through two, three or four decades.
What the numbers say is that marijuana usage figures will continue to grow because those who were born before the boomers, with lower rates of usage, are passing this mortal coil. This leaves three age groups with about 50% avg rates of usage for their age groups - and this will show up on polls for total usage.
These groups, middle aged and elderly, are also the groups that show the greatest increase in usage over the last few years, in terms of percentage changes. As people deal with diseases association with aging, it seems they are turning to marijuana as an affordable form of palliative health management.
Those who came of age after medical marijuana legalization have lower rates of usage at 36% at the same age as older groups, but, of course, much greater usage than the pre-1960s figures.
