We sang this in my high school acapella choir. (And took first place at state contest! ) It was everyone's favorite to sing, by far, although it was challenging. I sang alto and our part was a little easier. To this day it's still my favorite, although these days I can't sing it anything like I used to.

when it's sung by someone who can carry it. When the singer can't, it can be horrible. But a good song. I'm an atheist who prefers religious-based carols, because the music is usually much better.

One glaring exception to the better music thing: "Little Drummer Boy." Ugh.

Here it is with Mel and Nat King Cole. Mel starts it out and Nat finishes. Not sure who's playing piano. I suspect it's Mel. He wrote the song.

It's a great one. And this is a great version.

I'm also a big fan of "In the Bleak Midwinter", though the lyrics are kind of schmaltzy; I just love Gustav Holst's arrangement.

Especially the last verse...

….Good King Wenceslas looked out
On the feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
Brightly shone the moon that night
Though the frost was cruel
When a poor man came in sight
Gath'ring winter fuel

"Hither, page, and stand by me
If thou know'st it, telling
Yonder peasant, who is he?
Where and what his dwelling?"
"Sire, he lives a good league hence
Underneath the mountain
Right against the forest fence
By Saint Agnes' fountain."

"Bring me flesh and bring me wine
Bring me pine logs hither
Thou and I will see him dine
When we bear him thither."
Page and monarch forth they went
Forth they went together
Through the rude wind's wild lament
And the bitter weather

"Sire, the night is darker now
And the wind blows stronger
Fails my heart, I know not how,
I can go no longer."
"Mark my footsteps, my good page
Tread thou in them boldly
Thou shalt find the winter's rage
Freeze thy blood less coldly."

In his master's steps he trod
Where the snow lay dinted
Heat was in the very sod
Which the Saint had printed
Therefore, Christian men, be sure
Wealth or rank possessing
Ye who now will bless the poor
Shall yourselves find blessing

And not for any particularly religious reason...it's just a beautiful song imo.

Of course, I'd have to follow that up with this little ditty we did back in 2nd grade called 'Somebody snitched on me', so maybe I'm not a good judge of Christmas music.

Everyone loves Brenda Lee. That's like the bestest Christmas carol ever, and we can all sing it from memory. Sing along with me:

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells swing and jingle bells ring
Snowing and blowing up bushels of fun
Now the jingle hop has begun

Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time
Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Square
In the frosty air.

What a bright time, it's the right time
To rock the night away

Jingle bell time is a swell time
To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh
Giddy-up jingle horse, pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock

Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet
That's the jingle bell,
That's the jingle bell,
That's the jingle bell rock

And, then there's my other favorite. You will get a sentimental feeling when you watch this video, I'm sure:
