(40,656 posts)everything. Elections are a ways down the road. We have time and inclination to speak our minds about everything. Right now, man/woman is on people's minds.

(13,184 posts)The DU jury system is worse than useless, it's pernicious. Sadly, it depends on the wisdom of the jurors, who have proven to be a fickle and ideology-driven lot. If people agree with the position of the poster, they allow the post whether it violates the rules (and lowers our already ever-sinking standards) or not. That seems to work in reverse, too. It makes a mockery of the jury system.

He adds nothing of substance to his typical male "keep oppressing them" crap. By supporting the current horrors, you are just as guilty as those that create those horrors.

(2,518 posts)It's one of the things that makes this place suck sometimes. Attention-seeking button pushers on both sides, nit-pickers looking for offense, the usual cast of characters whining incessantly and not seeming to actually DO anything.
It's really pretty simple - Oppression sucks. Our species has treated women like shit for a long time. Some of us are trying to do our small part to smash the patriarchy, but it will take time. It does no good whatsoever for us to attack each other, but it's convenient to do so. I think pretty much everybody on DU, except for obvious trolls, is more or less on the same side of where we need to go as a species, but not everybody is as "enlightened," or moves at quite the same pace. But, as you point out, if you don't dot your i or cross your t properly, the same half dozen or so people will barrage you with negativity. It's like they think they can get people to change by constantly berating them. Delusional!
I've stayed out of those threads because they suck. And we've got so much other work to do as well, besides smashing the patriarchy. That's simply one of about a hundred major agenda items, it may or may not be at the top of the list, but it's certainly not going to happen by people who generally agree with each other yelling at each other anonymously on internet discussion forums.
passiveporcupine
(8,175 posts)they certainly are sensitive on certain issues. I've been a lurker for years at DU, and didn't join because of all the petty battles here and the people who become incensed if everyone doesn't agree with them or hold the same hot button issues as sacred. It does drag your soul down after awhile. I really appreciate the rational thinkers here, who try to bring some sense into the discussions.

(19,370 posts)That your post is directed at people who are engaging in the current unpleasantness to be found on DU where posts and OPs are directed at certain behaviors and when someone posts that they don't appreciate the broad-brushing aspects the response they receive is that they should not take it personally if the behaviors cited do not apply to them. Some of the responses here to your percieved broad-brushing (see how that works sports fans?) seem to be taking your comments personally. I dunno, just strikes me as ironic.

(6,001 posts)we can have a heated debate about where our 401(k) money is directed, then have a debate about who is the best pop and or rock singer of the 70's...but we have always treated each others as equals.
WHY CANT EVERYONE JUST TREAT EACH OTHER AS EQUALS?
I think my wife and i have more grown up arguments about whether cocoa puffs or cocoa pebbles are a better cereal than 90% of the arguments here

(53,029 posts)or a discussion of rape or violence against women without a few members taking it as some sort of personal attack on their rights, that would help a great deal. I, however, will not stop posting about human rights because some don't like it. Women are half of humanity, and I believe violence against women matters a great deal. If I am not safe from rape and assault, a bankers actions don't matter much. It's a clear hierarchy of needs.
Now, I certainly agree that it would go a long way if some did not insist on seeing their own rights tied to silence about rape and other kinds of violence against women. Why they do, I can't begin to imagine.

(10,952 posts)the endless threads on the female/male debate - to the point that I am starting to trash threads based upon the titles and not look any further at them. The problem I have is the lack of any productive discussion and too much useless yelling and antagonizing each other. DU seems to be going downhill rapidly these days which is really disappointing.

(82,383 posts)It is fascinating, to see the changes in our society - I've lived during the women's movement as a kid until today and seen so much progress and so much fighting against that progress. It's part of our daily lives, and we can discuss it.
