Piers Morgan Drilled By 90 MPH Cricket Bowl Because There Is A God

It was like a dunk tank, except the object was to nail a smarmy British talkshow host. Sign us up. The point of the whole ordeal was that Morgan had been particularly critical of the British cricket team during their recent Ashes match against Australia, where they were trounced 14.276 snoggleberries to thrice-twelve by the Aussies. Talk about a smorgasbord!

(We don’t know how cricket works.)

To prove how hard it is to hit a bouncing, 90 MPH, golf ball-sized cricket ball — Morgan stepped into the batter’s cube? to put his tweets where his mouth is against Aussie star bowler?, Brett Lee.

Four bowls, two hit him (causing a pretty substantial raspberry on his hip, seen below). Mission accomplished. (To Morgan’s credit, he did sort-of charge the “mound,” so his masculinity remains intact for now.)

That really looked to me like the pitcher was trying to hit the batter instead of the sticks, or wickets, or whatever they're called.

In the early 1930s, faced with the Australian Don Bradman, probably the best batsman the world has ever seen, the English team developed a style called 'bodyline', which meant bowling at the unprotected parts of the body (and back then, they had no helmets or body padding - only the leg pads), and positioning fielders to catch the balls they fended off with the bat.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodyline

It was a diplomatic incident. Eventually a rule was inserted to change where you could put the fielders so that it wasn't so easy to get catches out of it. Ever since then, there's been controversy about how much it's OK to aim at the batsman, not the stumps. It's reckoned to be unfair to pepper inexperienced batsmen (or those who are specialist bowlers - they have to bat too) with dangerous balls. So I can see why Hadlee is saying Lee shouldn't have done this (see reply #8).

and has always loved hanging around cricket greats.

This episode began when Morgan attacked the English team and questioned their courage against the OZ bowlers. England was already down 0-3 by then.
This 'assault' is huge news in the cricket world. Men have declared that 'it's not ccricket' in the truest sense of that phrase.

Wellington - “Incensed” New Zealand cricket great Richard Hadlee claims TV host Piers Morgan could have been killed by Brett Lee in an exhibition over and he wants the former Australian speedster punished.

During Saturday's tea break in the England-Australia Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Lee left Morgan battered and bruised as he pounded the Englishman with an over of short-pitched deliveries.

“As a former fast bowler I was appalled and outraged at what I witnessed,” Hadlee said in a column written for Fairfax News.

The exhibition was organised after Lee challenged Morgan to face an over when the television interviewer questioned the courage of some England batsmen.

“Lee's brutal assault on Morgan was extremely dangerous and unnecessary. It was clear that Morgan could not bat or defend himself against Lee's pace and intimidation,” Hadlee said.

a cricket ball is only very slightly smaller than a baseball (about nine inches in circumference) and much harder. There's a reason why the batsman and keeper wear pads on their legs; in the days before cricketers wore those broken femurs weren't uncommon.

Piers Morgan may appear to have the thickest skin on the planet but Australian fast bowler Brett Lee still managed to get under it.

The CNN presenter and former newspaper editor who had tweeted his bruises and reported a cracked wrist after facing the former international in a stunt exhibition over before 2000 spectators on Saturday has now confirmed the damage was more serious.

"BREAKING (literally) NEWS: Fractured rib confirmed by X-ray … thanks again @BrettLee_58", Morgan told his 3.9m Twitter followers. Suspicions that he had not escaped as lightly as he might have hoped from Lee's barrage were already circulating. Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan had already tweeted "Rumours @piersmorgan has a broken rib … I am sure you all will give him plenty of sympathy … !!!!!"

Lee's rear foot was level with the stumps, and his front foot was about 2 feet in front of the crease. Which just makes it harder to react in time to the ball, and gave Lee the ability to bounce it higher.
