35. I'm a Fiat freak... I have my eye on a new 500 Abarth.

My first two cars were Fiat X1/9's and I owned a Spider later. I loved them all.

The best part was proving to the doubters (Fix it again Tony, ha ha ha) that Fiats were actually good cars despite the myths.

He was of the opinion you couldn't turn one over so he zipped it down a slope and turned sharp right at the bottom. The car rolled three times and he climbed out through the roof. He was wrong.

An acquaintance had one shipped to the UK last year - needed to rent a large garage to cope with its length. Only ever comes out for posing - nothing wrong with that.

My mother had a 59 Cadillac, but I think it was a Deville. I took my first driving test in it. Almost failed because those fins made it hard to see in the back to park.

leaked which was 230,000. The only thing I repaired was a leaking radiator hose the whole time.

I paid 3500.00 for it and sold it for 1600.00. It was the best vehicle I've ever owned.

I bought a 2000 Eurovan about ten years ago. The $1000.00 service bills were like owning a Mercedes. I got rid of it after a couple of years...

I had a '59 beetle that was really barebones. It had heat when it was moving but none otherwise. It had no gas gauge so I used the tire iron to see how much gas was in the tank. The headlights worked most of the time but once in a while they flickered and didn't work. I loved that funky little car.

Several years ago, I would have said the Lotus Super Seven.



Now that I'm older and can afford one, I'm not really all that interested. The idea seems cool, but it is so completely impractical, uncomfortable, and expensive, that it just doesn't make sense to me.

I guess the car that best suits me now is the Honda Odyssey. We bought a new one this summer. Unlike the picture, we bought a white one because it is very hot where we live so we get the lightest colored cars possible for thermal reasons.

19. 1983 Nissan 280ZX 2+2 Turbo

Mine was a white T-top with red leather and suede interior, limited edition much like the one below except it was longer in the back, having the back seat. I bought it new, and kept it until 2 years ago, putting over 200K miles on it. Loved that car, so much fun to drive. The two-seater was surprisingly practical too -- I moved a set of floor to ceiling bookshelves in it once.



I don't like the new rounded body styles though, I like the ones that look like baby Jags. The 83/84 was the last year for that body style.

My (late) husband used to rebuild/restore Z's, and so he owned/crewchiefed a showroom stock race team for promotion purposes. His car beat Paul Newman at Charles Town in 1983 (as second, Newman was third, and I forget who won). It was a rainy mess, everybody was muddy.

It's the British Standard 10, known briefly in the USA as the Triumph 10. I had a 1958. Woefully underpowered, it had an ineffable "cute factor," that suited me very well in the early 1970s. Mine was two-tone, in baby blue with a white top. It was much admired by the young women I was courting in those days. Four doors, and a beveled-glass rear view mirror.

Sadly, few were imported into the United States, and parts were difficult to obtain, so I was only able to keep it for a couple of years. Perhaps I'll find another one some day and lovingly restore it to its original loveliness.

They had originally planned on a V12, but went with a TT V6 to save weight. I believe the last Jag V12s were in the mid 90s XJSs/XJ12s. The Jag V12 was one hell of an engine. In spite of so many advances in technology, I still think they were about as smooth as engines get.

Ford's criminal greed was a result of their slight oversight on what happens when you rear end a car with a cheap, light duty rear end right in front of a low hanging gas tank. the dangerous inspection cover bolts of that base model housing would rip the gas tank upon contact. Cars with the V6 used an 8" housing like early Mustangs had, with no rear inspection cover/bolts to do the damage with.
Fortunately, my candyapple 72 wagon has a 9" to protect me and transfer the V8 oomph safely and soundly to the ground.
Early Pintos with small blocks are cool as hell.

One of my first cars was a 60 VW Van with the rag top and the curved back window. Took that car to Yellowstone. Thanks to that car I learned to hate VW's at a very early age though.

GMC Suburban that I had set up to do various soil tests with.


I had two 55gal drums (front to back along the center line) that I could use to carry my own water for when I wasn't near a source. Those were on stands that a friend helped me build. Where ever I parked, I could level the drums so as to use the markings I put on them to measure outflow. I had tons of fun stuff to take soil samples with and to install small 'wells' (piezometers) with which to test the subsurface hydraulic conductivity. I had a ring infiltrometer and a Guelph permeameter ( http://www.soilmoisture.com/prod_details.asp?prod_id=292 ) to play with. Fun Times

I used to call her my 'Forest Wraith'. I just loved the dark green color.

Unfortunately my health got bad and I couldn't keep working. I had drawn up plans for more stuff to add to her to make her more useful. (I also wanted to see if I could mount a PVC pipe that I could launch those tiny Estes Rockets with. That was to be more for fun )

I've had one of these for 15 years, he's named Chief Joe. after Chief Joseph, (Hinmaton-Yalaktit real name in Nez Perce), because he leads me to escape and freedom. Joe is a lot funkier (has more "unique character" lol) than the rig in the photo.

It's a rolling motel room, except better, solar power, shower, toilet, fridge, stove, bed, sound system. I have it rigged for comfort and entertainment.I've lived in it, used it to travel and stay in for road work, traveled around the west a bunch of times, traveled in Mexico in it for a year, and I use it for storage when not traveling. Get's 18 mpg, and it's small enough to park on the street if necessary. It's underpowered, so it's slow going up hills, but I don't care about that.

I also had a '66 Westfalia, the first vehicle I traveled around the US and lived in. He was named "Zippy", and was anything but. I loved that bus, our old hippie wagon. *sigh*

67. It's hard to find a decent one at a reasonable price these days.

I bought mine for $3,000 in 1998, and it needed a bit of work.

Be sure that, if you buy one, it has the rear axle changed out to an aftermarket axle, or was manufactured with a safe axle.

Truer words have never been spoken! I used to live like that before I settled down and had kids. My youngest just turned 20, but still lives at home. I'm disabled, and he has chosen to help take care of me, when I need it. That's why I mentioned a little bit bigger one, with the van front end. He would be with me, doing most of the driving, as sitting for long periods, and driving, are two of the worst things for me. I'm lucky to be walking, having suffered a broken neck and back along with major nerve damage throughout my body.

Hopefully we can do this in a year or two....

Two other favorites were my '73 Camaro SS and my current 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.2 Litre (318 Magnum) V-8, fulltime 4 wheel drive & heavy duty tow package. I bought it used in 2006, with only 120,000 miles on it. I've put another 120,000 on it, and it still runs like a champ! I was really surprised at the gas milege, too. At 75mph on the interstate with the cruise control set, I average 24mpg.... I've gotten up to 30mpg while "drafting" an 18 wheeler.

I've always had an eye for the Dodge Challenger, too. I love the old ones, and the new models are really sharp too!

I'm almost 51 years old and have owned close to, if not over, 100 cars since I was 16. One time I traded cars 3 times in one week! Out of all of them, only 4 were foreign vehicles: A Mazda B-2000 truck (everything interchangeable with a Ford Ranger) and 3 Honda Accords. I loved the Hondas and would have no qualms about owning another one.

I refuse to pay over $15,000 for a vehicle and don't care what they look like, etc. as long as they work and are reliable. However, I do miss this guy - 1994 Nisan Sentra. This is it right before it was taken away to a junkyard when I moved from Tulsa to Kansas City in December 2011. Bought it new in 1995 for around $8000, and it was an incredibly reliable, cheap car. I went through my records after getting rid of it and aside from routine maintenance (oil changes, new tires, etc), it cost me less than $3000 in repairs all the time I had it... Mostly the starters kept crapping out on me. And until the final year, it was still getting low 30s in mpg.

One great automobile.
Drives like a dream. Comfortable. 30 MPG no matter the speed. Shoulder harnesses standard, even in 1961. Rear seat heat, standard. Unbreakable engine and transmission. And the best, easy to fix.

I owned four of them. The Volvo four cylinder cars were great. I still drive one. The best was the 740. I have a 18 year old 940 now. Not as good as my previous 740 which was probably the best Volvo ever, but not always user fixable.

They lasted forever. Too bad Volvo abandoned the four banger. Big mistake.
