(41,198 posts)Sokolich is pitch perfect, because he's not even trying to pitch. Doesn't get more real than him. Shows you what happens when you're drunk on power; take clumsy-assed swings at the wrong people and leave yourself wide open for a devastating counter-attack.
Beautiful.

(4,661 posts)... - very well done. And I loved Mayor Sokolich's statement that "David Wildstein deserves an ass-kicking".
But I suspect Kelly, Wildstein and others will fall on their swords for Christie to keep him above the fray. It use to be that some of these people valued their reputations and futures enough to not take the rap for something like this. But now.... money politics can pay 'em enough to shut up, retire from politics and become a regular on Fox News.
I would be hesitant to assume Christie won't survive this. He probably won't, but money cleans up a lot of crap. And I don't trust any of them...

(13,910 posts)It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, but I'm not convinced that Christie's political career is quite over yet. He's definitely got a minefield to navigate right now, but I wouldn't write him off quite yet. I suspect that a lot of powerful GOPers saw Christie as the best bet to take the White House in 2016 and therefore might just be willing to make some quick campaign contributions to help him clean this up.

(9,033 posts)He needed the independents and the reach-across-the-aisle image and he just lost them/it. Even if he personally had nothing to do with this, look at who/what he surrounds himself with.

(10,915 posts)it's only a matter of time before an email or text surfaces that shows Christie ordered, indorsed or was CC'd.
At that point he'll be up on perjury charges amongst others.
yeoman6987
(14,449 posts)I don't think he will be up for perjury charges as he did not say anything under oath. A lie on TV will not be enough for perjury. However, it will make him look very bad. 2016 is probably over for him but he was never going to get the nomination anyway. The conservatives never would let that happen. And if it did, conservatives would stay home. Not sure why Democrats are happy about this. Now if it was Cruz that would be a different story because he would be popular among conservatives and would work hard to make him President.
Segami
(14,923 posts)...to "keep him above the fray"...but I believe all bets are off if criminal charges are brought forth that their actions 'endangered people's lives' and could have been directly responsible for the death of a 91 year old woman that needed medical attention.
Were going to look at every person who has a role, he insisted. Clearly, theres a reason to ask questions of Bridget Kelly and other people in the governors office.
Wisniewski reminded reporters that federal and state laws had been broken, making criminal charges a possibility.

Whiskeytide
(4,661 posts)... might be a different animal altogether. And I suspect there is also criminal liability for misappropriation of public resources and misuse of public funds, etc. Of course, you'd have to have a prosecutor willing to refuse a "full restitution" plea deal unless they sang like canaries.
Dopers_Greed
(2,647 posts)They aren't even going to touch Christie with them. That's what the job of the high-level aides is, to be the fall guy so the boss doesn't get in trouble. Remember Scooter Libby?
Government officials are, in most cases, literally above the law.
Segami
(14,923 posts)that the plan with Scooter Libby was to take the fall short term and be pardoned by Bush in the end.
Ooops, that didn't happen as planned which made president Darth Vador blow a breathing circuit board.
Will someone put on the goat costume for Christie even if a criminal investigation or charges was forthcoming?......we shall see how loyal these weasels truly are.

(13,141 posts)I don't suppose they'd get a chance to spill the
beans, even if they wanted to.

(26,060 posts)Because if all the charges are true - that there is no study, that this was purely retaliation, criminal charges could be brought. I'd be willing to retire for my boss but I wouldn't spend one second in jail for him.
Dopers_Greed
(2,647 posts)Surely these cronies get some sort of "hazard pay" or are at least guaranteed a cushy job somewhere once their sentence is up or they are pardoned. No to mention that their jail time is probably made as comfortable as possible for them, with the lightest sentence given.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)be possible with state charges but now the feds are involved and Christie and his cronies will have no power there. It's a huge risk for them to take. I would never go to jail for by employer - and I've been with him for 12 years and consider him a good friend. He is, of course, not someone who would ever put me in that position.
truebluegreen
(9,033 posts)And I think Christie is history on the national stage. The straight-shooting, take-charge unconventional governor couldn't think of a thing to say for 7 hours and still hasn't fired his deputy chief of staff (perhaps afraid of what she will say if he runs her over with his campaign bus).
Does he seriously think anyone will believe that he didn't even ask why his appointees were resigning?

(47,940 posts)Am I the only one who thinks maybe the reports of his political death are premature?
Chan790
(20,176 posts)Well, there may be some people who are deluded or willfully-refusing to read the writing on the wall. But make no mistake, his career just took a one way trip to a dirt nap in the Pine Barrens.

wryter2000
(47,940 posts)I think you're right. I sure hope so.
I take 2 to 1 odds he stays and this blows over. Hope I'm wrong but...

(56,848 posts)Of course, if Christie were a Democrat, the media would (en masse) be demanding he resign and saying his political career is 100% over.

Sorry to laugh, but if any of you think Chris Christy is done because of this, you are seriously mistaken. He has people falling on swords to protect him. He knew what was going on, what governor wouldn't. He proved how he will survive, he fired the woman he asked to do it, she bowed to him. Hes a bully and will get his way.
leftynyc
(26,060 posts)The only real question is whether he'll be able to run in 2016 for President. I'm thinking no. He simply doesn't have the support of the rabid right that votes in primaries. His supporters will head to Jeb. They REALLY want the white house - they wont take a risk like this.
