The phrase was added to the Pledge in 1954, when it could be pushed as a "thumb our nose at Soviet state-mandated atheism" item, and who'd fight it in the heyday of McCarthyism? It was the same era when "In God we trust" was elevated over "E pluribus unum" as the national motto, and when Georgia added a Confederate saltaire to their state flag: it was all about showing who was boss.
The worst part are the ignorant ones who don't even know it was a late addition.
