Poorest at Risk, Skepticism High as Officials OK Water Safety in West Virginia

Though officials announce water back at 'safe' limit, scientists and vulnerable residents not so sure

After the ban was lifted, residents were quick to post photos of the allegedly "safe" water online.

That (now famous) picture does not inform anyone of anything since the chemical in question is clear.

It's like a picture of a dead fish labeled "Fukishima!"... as if no fish had ever died before.

But I have seen plenty of badly discolored water, particularly in more rural places.

The picture claims that the water is that way because of the chemical spill. Is it?

I have no reason to think it is. Maybe it is. Maybe it isn't.

It is a picture on the internet.

However, there is something odd. The chemical claimed to be spilled is practically water white. Why is the water so yellow? If you take some isopropyl alcohol from your medicine cabniet and mix it 1% in water, it doesn't turn the water yellow.

Something is really fishy about this incident.

has been cooking in residents' hot water heaters for nearly a week, maybe that's what 4-methylcyclohexane methanol does to the lining to the tank, or to PVC pipes it passes through.

Not the pipe. PVC is still water white. That's why the pipes end up white.

Thing is, this solvent is going to be stable to water heater temperatures. One would have to get to combustion or pyrolysis temperature to get the bond fracturing necessary to cyclize into materials that are inherently dark.

I'm wondering if there is more that spilled, or whether this was unremediated ground that the solvent percolated through and took all kinds of other chemicals with it.

The chemical does not cause discoloration.

Spreading fake images does not help the cause. Commondreams is usually better than this.

Okay to drink West Virginia water? If you're pregnant, maybe not, the federal CDC advises belatedly

Since making the initial calculations, scientists have obtained additional animal studies about MCHM. These are currently being reviewed. At this time, the scientists continue to recommend 1 ppm as a protective level to prevent adverse health effects. However, due to limited availability of data, and out of an abundance of caution, you may wish to consider an alternative drinking water source for pregnant women until the chemical is at non-detectable levels in the water distribution system.

I have family and friends in Charleston. This is a huge problem (check out my recent OP's) and it needs to be a bigger scandal than it already is. They still won't use the water because it smells, never mind the assurances from industry and government. The water in their house is clear after purging rust from pipes. But that is no help, because you cannot see the toxin.

And when news outlets circulate hoax material such as these pictures, it diminishes our case and makes it harder to work for change and justice. We need to give out accurate, truthful information or the VRWC will use our inaccuracies to belittle us and lessen our impact.
